Wouldn't it serve to have that area cleaned up on a semi-regular basis? One day a year doesn't seem like enough. If you didn't want to organize a Del Monte Cleanup, I'd be willing to do the legwork on it, but probably for another day after the Lover's Point Cleanup.

I would have to agree and would be willing to commit to every other month, but probably not monthly since I would like to do some fun diving as well every now and again.

I could probably do every other month too.

Sweet. Since we have at least 3 interested in an every other month, I think I might go by the harbormaster's office and talk with him about it some time this week. I think I could probably get more people on board with this. Maybe one of the dive shops would sponsor us. If not, we could just be a group of friends doing a good deed for the community. Heck, if anything, we might find some interesting stuff down there.

I'd love to do the reef check, but the class times are not the greatest for me since there are no more classes in 2007 available. I might be going to Moscow or Kiev around that March time frame (possibly in February) and will be leaving the Monterey area in early July 2008. I definitely want to do something local to help out, even I might not be able to do the Reef Check course. The undaria control volunteer might be more doable for me, heck, if it all worked out right, I might be able to do both. :)

The reasoning behind asking about the pier is because I don't think those cleanups should be once a year. And if the harbormaster seems to be looking for people to step up, then I'd be more than willing to parlay my newfound passion into something that helps the community in which I live. Thanks for the info. :)

I think that I am going to try and do the 15th up at Lake Berryessa. http://napavalleydivers.com/2007/09/15/ Michelle - I know this is up in the general direction that you are in - and I spoke with Roger about it and he's still got room for divers - could be fun.

As for the other cleanups - I would be more than happy to help out with whatever (schedule permitting, etc.).

I'd like to be on a dive team in Monterey this year for the cleanup day. Does anyone know of a team leader that needs volunteers or should I just register on the Ocean Conservancy website?

Hope to see some of you there.

Happy diving,
At Aquarius Dive Shop (2040 Del Monte), we are sponsoring a clean-up event on International Cleanup Day and welcome all volunteers. We have registered with the City of Pacific Grove and with PADI Project Aware (http://www.projectaware.org/americas/english/icd.asp) to hit the water at Lovers Point #3 on Saturday, September 15. We will give free air fills for all volunteers who come; we are still trying to determine prizes. So far, we have decided on a free air fill card, good for 10 fills, for the diver who brings back the most trash and for the diver who brings back the most unusual piece of trash. I'm leaving it to my wife to define "most trash" (e.g. by weight? by volume?) and "most unusual".

This will be a great opportunity to have some fun in the water with a group and to make a difference at one of our most beloved dive sites. We all know the bottom there is littered with weight belts, so be sure to bring your lift bags! Sign up in the shop (2040 Del Monte), give us a call (375-1933), or send us email (aquariusds@sbcglobal.net) to get on the roster of volunteers.

I actually don't have any lift bags or the sort. I've never done a clean up of sorts either. What should I bring?

The 375-1900 # wasn't working for me. I got through on 831.375.1933. Just signed up - and will be there bright and early. :)
