That is somewhat of a mischaracterization Stan... perhaps some non-dir folk use it that way... but for those who are truely DIR (and not just wannabes) that is not the way the term is used... so when you hear the stroke epitaph being bandied about carelessly it is usually (but not always) coming from NON-DIR sources. If & when a DIR diver uses the term it doesn't mean NON-DIR ... it means unsafe. (Leave George out of it... he can call anyone anything he wants... when you can do what he does you can too...)

My preferred term for *unsafe diver* is... hmmm...
Well I guess it is *unsafe diver*....

BTW... you will hear me on occassion refer to "Rototillers"...
This is not a pejorative term, it is a term of endearment... you see I love to dive with rototillers and help them gain skills... (though not with unsafe rototillers... I stay away from them.)

How a term is used, to whom it is directed and by whom is as important as the term itself... If I call one of my DIR buddies a *stroke* that is OK... if I call one of my rototiller buddies a *stroke* that might or might not be ok... If I call you a stroke that is definitely not OK. If I call any of my buddies a rototiller then that is an accurate description of what just happened on the dive :D

STROKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

just kidding:D

Rototillers- good one. I'm picturing the hand finning with the bicycle kick.

We use the term "goby" to describe the negative bouyant diver that hops around the bottom from rock to rock. Likewise it's used in fun. The endearing version is "cute lil' goby".

Hmm.. so, for me to be DIR, not only do I have to adopt your gear configuration, skills, and procedures, but also your slang definitions? Would I go from DIR to non-DIR if I used the term "stroke" to mean anything other than unsafe?

You don't have to adopt anything jonnythan...
Suit yourself...

Way to avoid the real question ;)

How about: Does being DIR require one to use a specific definition of the word "stroke"?
