The dry suit is a necessary evil... er... beautiful piece of equipment that keeps me nice and toasty warm!! The hoses are well kept and don't dangle! At least I hope!

True enough. I also dive dry (read warm) and you do seem to keep your hoses under control! But there are a lot of them...

And if you've been to DUI's site lately, as you know, I love my DUI!!

Did they die in a car wreck or ran out of air?

Both had heart attacks but I can't help but believe had they been wearing an AIR II at the time they would have both lived. But our work won't let you wear scuba gear during business hours.

The SS1 is an integrated right? newb here...

Yes. The SS1 is an inline octo made by Atomic Aquatics. The Air or Air2 is an inline octo made by Scubapro. Dive Rite has the Rite Source which looks suspiciously like the Air 2.

People use the name Air or Air2 the way Xerox is used synanomously with copying. Other manufacturers also make inline octos. I believe Oceanic has one.

I have two BCs, both Dive Rite but one of them is equipped with an SS1 and the other equiped with the Rite Source. While the Rite Source works just fine, it doesn't breath as easily as the SS1 and I prefer the inflator/deflator controls of the SS1 as well. It seems like I could regulate inflation and deflation a bit better with the SS1 than with the Rite Source.

Of course the Rite Source is only an additional $100 when ordered with the BC while the SS1 costs close to $300.

i made a mistake by not doing what i am about to tell you right now. get a good first stage look at apex or scubapro, after that buy two of the same second stages. put your primary on a 5-7 foot hose, and the other one on a regular hose. put the secondary one on a necklace for you incase your buddy has an ooa situation. this will have less failure points and the intergrated systems brake often and are unreliable. plus if you ever move to doubles you can just buy another first stage.

Be Carefull in choosing an integrated 2nd as with any bcd we turn it over after any dive and let the water drain out , but some ... not all, remains inside the bcd. this water is then stagnant, legionares sickness /illness loves stagnant water , and if you have the integrated type, so do you.
hope this helps

You do know that the integrated 2nd doesn't breath air out of the BCD, right?

TUSA sells the Duo Air which is a 3rd generation Air 2 with minor cosmetic changes.

In my experience, most of the variability between integrated octo breathing performance is cuased by how they are individually adjusted.
