SS1 can easily be replaced with a Zeagle BX inflator, a simple inline adaptor will make the big fitting into a small standard fitting. Having spares is part of diving, what would you do if one of the regular second stages starts to freeflow?

Measure IP, Adjust it, clean it, tune it. Then swap to my backup regulator if those remedies were unsuccessful.

Sure, but how many people can do any of that? Very few in my experience.
Perhaps, but you can eliminate a free flow in 4 seconds by sticking a long allen wrench down the inflation nipple and turning a few degrees. The hardest part is finding the right size allen wrench.

If we are making a "fair" comparison between the attributes of second stages with those devices, then should we assume a similar level of ignorance between the respective users?

Anyone who can do the same with a standard octo, as John points out it’s actually pretty easy to make these minor adjustments. All dive gear can fail, the SS1 is no more prone to failure than anything else, any scare tactic used to dissuade an octo/inflator also applies to any other regulator.

I disagree and shared my reasons.

This is another one of those Scubaboard things that basically comes down to personal preference, comfort level, and convenience. As I said, I personally don't feel comfortable with the idea of a combined inflator/ safe second, and I've never felt burdened carrying a traditional octo. But for those willing to take the time to learn to use and practice using, along with instructing others on what they need to do in an emergency, I guess its OK.

The issues I have are with scare tactics, my reason for not using them has more to do with design, I don’t like the to big buttons placed in a far to easy to depress unintentionally. I did just use one in Thailand, the DGX version, with no issues but diving warm water without a drysuit is so much easier. There are thousands of these in use everyday throughout the world, no one is dying from their use and no one needs to be scared about the use of one, the octo inflator is an option wether or not it’s the best one.
