Can anyone recommend or make any suggestions about insurance for dive gear? Utility? Companies to go through, etc. Is it really necessary?

what about canada

I have a personal items policy through State Farm for my scuba gear.

scubaaaronh:
Does that cover flood insurance for cameras and computers. I have my boat insured with state farm.

Well, if your camera floods you can run the boat out into the middle of the lake, scuttle it with the camera aboard and then get the camera paid for.

Oh wait... :D

LOL!! uuummmmm no!!!!!!! the cam isn't quite worth that much hassle and having to outfit a new boat.

If you have homeowner's or renter's insurance, you probably have personal property coverage for dive gear theft or accidental loss no matter where in the world that it happens. If you have trip insurance for travel, this often provides additional coverage. If you do have coverage, purchasing extra insurance is not necessary. You also need to figure out the probability of losing gear. Maybe I am lucky, but in 25 years of diving, flying to dive venues, locking gear in the back of my car, staying in less than deluxe accommodations, I have never had gear lost or stolen. I am not sure that independent coverage is worth it.

I first used the company associated with DAN. Never had a claim but they were a pain in the patootie to work with. Very difficult.

Now I too use DEPP and they are great to work with.....but have no experience with a claim....and hope I never do.

I checked out the insurance that works with DAN (since our premium ins through Dan does not cover gear) - and it was, for 2 full sets of gear, $206 a year. Seemed a bit excessive really because there was still a deductible of $100-$250, depending on the situation or the gear.

Can anyone tell me about what their premiums are through DEPP?
