You are right. I didn't look at it that way. Though he may have been legal because he had local staff working with him. Got the impression he owned the place under the yellow beach house down by Sundowners.

Sucks that one of your fondest memories is overpaying someone likely working illegal taking money from locals and paying no taxes. For 4 dollars you could get 8 fresh Balleadas made by a local Honduran

I wonder what portion of the divemaster/instructor community falls into that category - at least as far as not paying taxes or having job-related residency goes. I remember hearing some instructors talking about doing the "Guatemala visa run" (this was in the days before the CA-4 treaty (not sure if that still works anymore)) so they could get extensions on their tourist visas. Granted, there may not be that many Honduran instructors but still it bothered me to hear that folks did that.

Sorry for hijacking the thread.

It's OK. It was only one of my yummiest memories. Most of my non-dive related fondest memories involve local establishments and Hondurans so maybe he'll let me off the hook.

Maybe, but if you can't tell the diff between an Austrian and a Frenchman, well, that's going to be a problem.

you do not want to walk it, especially if alone and at night. If you think it seems OK to do the walk the re read this post

Thanks for the advice, I take it its not safe at night, just a hunch eh LOL
Im sure the people working the resort can help me out if I need to find something to do. 7 days goes too quick and I want to enjoy every second if possible.
Gotta stop getting up at 5am on vacation though, seems im asleep by 9pm LOL

The walk from West Bay to West End has virtually no lighting at night and there are many places one could hide along the way. Also, it's not pure beachfront. There's a waterway with a high bridge over it to allow the passage of boats. You have to climb a metal stairway, cross the bridge, and go down the other side. I would not want to do that at night. I heard they fixed the missing steps... Also, there are rocky areas by Luna Beach that are at times not easy to cross, even during the daytime. You have to step out into the water to go around them. Take a cab at night and a water taxi during the day (if they are running).

Thanks for the info, if I can stay up late enough to enjoy the night life, at least now I can get there, probably take a taxi from the hotel if I decide to check it out. looking forward to some night dives there. Should be nice

I can pay for the extra ones including a couple of night dives

looking forward to some night dives there.

I would investigate that further before you go and then make arrangements as soon as you get there, also spread out your reservations amongst various dive ops.

Night Dives in that area are generally offered as a once-a-week boat dive (on a specific scheduled night) that you have to sign up for in advance. (Quite often on a Tuesday or Wednesday) They will not go and simply cancel if they do not have minimum numbers.

I am a firm believer in hiring the service of a DiveMaster for a Night Dive... and do a private shore dive or possibly hire a water taxi to serve as your Dive Boat. You'll see more and the entire experience will be better.

When we were at Bananarama in spring 2011 and spring last year there was a Honduran lady that came by in the morning and sold baleadas sitting in the drive next to the dive shop. They were the best breakfast! (One con carne and one with egg.) She was gone when we were there in September but there are to joints in the parking area between Bananarama and the West Bay Mall. Still good food and reasonable price. Now if I could get my Spanish to be passable.

I agree. Having done it once with a DM, I might do a night shore dive over to Mandy's on my own. But other than that, I'd stick with the led dive at night.

On the trip in September one night dive we found something like six octopi. My dive buddy got some great video of the things. They just wouldn't hide or couldn't find the hidy hole they wanted.

It's interesting that they mention that unlimited shore dive"S" (emphasis on the plural) are included. Infinity Bay is located towards the end of West Bay Beach. There is one main entry point near there that goes down to a sandy bottom. From there you go through a swim through that takes out out of the wall and from there you can go left or right. The Mandy's Eel Garden site is in that area. That general area is very nice and I do enjoy going there, but I would probably only want to do it once or twice, maybe three times. I'm not aware of any other *convenient* entry points in that area. So, while you may have unlimited shore diving, it's not a *huge* benefit. Also, personally, I would not suggest going in there for the first time without someone who is familiar with the location (unless you have a good dive site map beforehand). Yes, it's a very easy site but it's best if you've got some kind of reference beforehand.

Just my $0.02 (or about 1/3 of a Honduran Lempira)

Will they sell shore dives to anyone or do you have to dive with them in order to get shore diving?
