I think you're missing the point. It's not that I don't want to pay a fair price for a high-quality gauge, it's that I don't want to pay extra for stuff I neither need nor want, like brand-name status and fancy graphics.

I'm sorry, but I just can't stop thinking about this. This kind of attitude just drives me crazy. I mean, what is the logic behind this argument? What is my life worth? My life is worth everything, every penny I've ever made, and every cent I'll ever make for the rest of my life. Is that how much I have to pay for a stupid gauge? How much did you pay for your gauge? $200? Is that how much your life is worth?

I think the gist of what he is trying to say (if you haven't figured it out already) is that something as important as this device should not be obtained 'as cheap as you can find'. You know, "I already spent my money on the $35 retractor for my $200 pistol grip, positively buoyant light, so I really don't want to have to spend another $100 on a pressure gauge, cause, you know, it just sits at the end of that hose and gets all banged up!"

Sambolino has a valid point, just because something is critical doesn't mean you should naively overpay for it. You don't want to seek out the cheapest *quality* item, but given a quality item it is just smart consumerism to then seek out the cheapest price for it. If one place sells an item for $50 and another place sells it for $70, you aren't demonstrating a greater concern for your safety by buying from the higher priced source or a lack of concern by buying from the lower priced source.

I absolutely agree, but finding the cheapest SPG and finding a quality SPG at a good price are two entirely different things.

wow, now it's funny to me that I found an argument over a $70 piece of life support equipment here of all places. I'm pretty sure that if your getting into this type of diving you have already realized that tech diving isn't exactly a cheap hobby to take up. Being willing to invest in tech and throwing down thousands dollars on equipment then complaining about the cost of a quality gauge just seems kind of ironic to me.

Lets face it, a lot of diving equipment is made in the same factory. For these brass and glass gauges that factory is in Italy. Is an SPG from Halcyon at $115 that much safer than the same gauge w/o the "H" logo for $50? The OP was looking for places to purchase quality inexpensive gauges, not your gonna die advice. People should learn to stick to the topic of the post.
