I just don't understand why you aren't patronizing your LDS for your gear. Are they that bad with service? Are you still planning on diving/taking classes with them?
I get more local diving info here on scuba board than I do from my local dive shops. I agree 100% with h2andy above.

I don't understand either..at our lds we credit 3 of their rental fees towards new gear when someone purchases from us..sorta a slap in the face when they get gear elsewhere..should give lds a chance to match price..

i agree that a matching price offer is a good thing. i do that if i can. heck, i'll even pay slightly more to keep the dollars local.

most of the time, the LDS says "take a hike." in fact, ALL the time, but once. just once, did they come down some (not all the way) to the internet price which they themselves checked (no need to take my word for it).

instead, they act hurt (like you did above, "slap in the face").

guys, it's a frigging business. you wouldn't give me air if i didn't pay for it, right?
you wouldn't give me gear if i didn't pay for it, right? you wouldn't give me lessons
if i didn't pay for them, right?

we don't have a friend-friend relationship. we have a business-client relationship.

what's this "slap in the face" about?

i don't owe you anything, just like you don't owe me anything.

you want to sell me something? be like every other business i know and earn that sale somehow.

it's not a "slap in the face." it's business. that's what it is. you make a living off my money. well, i want value for my money. provide it, or i'll go elsewhere.

why do you think you're entitled to my business? you're not, sorry

I agree completely with Andy!!!! I am a customer that demands the best value at the best price. I am also an instant gratification guy so if the price isn't ridiculously different I buy local. But when the LDS marks gear up so much that its cheaper to buy the product and pay for shipping online they don't give me much of a choice.

I don't owe you a thing!!!

BTW, Scubatoys is an LDS for me so I get the best of both worlds. But sometimes I have to buy from other vendors as the price point is better.

Once again, I repeat, I agree with h2andy. Word for word. i think i might start typing all lower cases too...;)

maybe the OP went to this shop:D ...http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=148379

furthermore, why do so many LDS bunnies and owners insist on coming to the rescue of every other LDS in the world on the internet, when all I usually hear in person at many LDS's is, "Oh god, don't buy from them, they are horrible and such...?" and why assume the LDS deserved the business from the OP in the first place? clearly if the original poster rented from and then decided not to by from their LDS, then this LDS didn't leave much of an impression. that's your answer. welcome to an internet site with ads for internet scuba sales and advice on the internet about scuba. when a lds does a better job than this site does, then i will go to them. some do and i love those lds's. most don't. sadly, most don't realize that they don't until it's too late and then they blame the internet.

slap in the face...lol.

Really I didn't want to get into that whole question of LDS vs internet, but was asking if they really were that bad that he didn't want to use them. I would ask where you are going to get your gear serviced after getting it online. I'm sure the LDS will do it along with everyone elses that bought their gear from them. But I wouldn't expect it to be put on a rush job.

sounds like blackmail to me ... another reason to avoid that shop

I would check around town, find items you like that fit you, and then buy them from online (reputable) stores who will work with your budget. Sounds like the wrong way to treat your LDS but you aren't trying to help them keep up and running....you are trying to get the best bang for your buck.

(Trust me, I just got through buying all my own gear 2 weeks ago)

I'll address the question of not going to my LDS....The closest LDS to me is actually a sporting goods store chain (I'll leave the name out of it) which has very limited selection of gear...in fact, when I've gone in to them to talk about brands I'm interested in (eg, Zeagle BCD), they will automatically downplay the brand (eg tell me how bad the rip cord system is) and try to convince me to buy something I'm not interested in.

One of the better LDSs in my vicinity is actually over 40 minutes away from me (without traffic!)...and in no way would I have to be in that area other than for the LDS, which is inconvienent and difficult for me to get to for servicing or repair with my schedule.

It's too bad (but understandable) that all the better LDSs are closer to the water, but for someone like me that lives an hour inland, that can become a hassle.

Congratulation...Have your own gears now
