tomboyy,

You fought the good fight. It's pretty clear from your updates that he's already in the"been there, done that" mode and does not have the right stuff.

Cut your losses and go dive with some capable peers and have a good time.

You did the right thing in sending him back for remedial OW. Where he goes from here needs to be his move.

Thanks, on_two_wheels. My suit was a 3mm farmer john with a 7mm step in jacket, so that is ~10 pounds, not counting everything else. If I do count the other stuff, we're easily at 13 pounds.

Of course I'm ridiculously skinny (~3% body fat) so I sink very easily so maybe that formula may not work for me so well.

Dr_Neil, thanks for the info. Like I said, that would still give me 23.6 pounds. I started with 18 and was obviously over-weighted, but as I mentioned I sink like a stone. When I got my tanks and weights for my OW dives, they basically just took 10% of my body weight as my starting point and they were assuming 7mm full suit. I knew I get too cold and would need more than 7mm but had no idea how much weight to expect since I didn't use any weights in my pool dives, with 2.5mm long sleeve shorty.

Tom_boyy, sometimes you just have to let people come to things on their own time/terms. I've been teaching people to climb for 15 years now. Everyone really enjoys it when they go out with me and they always want me to call them when I'm going climbing. My answer is always, "If you want to climb, you can call me any time you want. I will not call you, though, because I don't want to push you into this if you aren't really interested."
