HawaiiLover:
I'm done with scubadiving. I'm quitting this because I found out that I have a heart murmur after my physical exam here in Indiana last week. I don't have any problem with my heart but the EKG showed early sign! I'm kinda distraughted and can't deal without scubadiving or snubadiving in Oahu. BUT I still keep the scuba diving stuff at my sister who lives in Pearl City as in case my heart is OK with Dr.'s approval. I would love to meet you in person and chat / have fun scubadiving. Damn, I'm so upset right now and cried a lot. I will keep you posted about me. I want to keep my name on ScubaBoard. Because it is fun to read and write with scubadiving friends.

God Bless You all!
Hugs,
Kj

HawaiiLover--you may not be done diving. Go to www.scuba-doc.com Search around that site and you will find the information you need. Read it, print it and take it to the doctor the next time you go. Alternatively you could provide your doctor with the website and let him/her do some research on their own. Then go to visit the doctor and discuss the information. Most likely there is no reason for you to stop diving.

I hope you will find out that you can dive again, but if not I greatly respect that your putting your health first. I can only imagine how hard it would be to give up diving.

Kj,

Never give up!
To dive is to live.

Easy there, Tom...

I've dived on days I wasn't at my best, and I've thought about the possibility of diving or stopping if I developed a medical reason not to - and I know a couple of divers who should stop, as they are a risk to themselves and others.

I'm sure you meant well here, thinking her condition does not warrant stopping, but sometimes we have to set the enthusiasm aside for prudence, and I hate it when that happens. I'm more a Damned the Torpedoes, Full Speed Ahead fellow myself. :D

Maybe you need to stop, and maybe you don't. Wait for a compentent dive medicine doc to rule on it before you throw in the towel.

I have a mitral valve prolapse. Does not bother me and I am cleared for diving. I just have to take antibiotics before dental visits. 176 dives in past three years. 78 this year, and I mostly shore dive so you can add climing up and down steep hills to get to the beach (some are downright cliffs.). I run 2 miles in 15:30 too. Now with my conditon, if I start to suffer a lot of cronic fatique, then I may have to re-evalate the situation. Bottom line is each case and situation is different. Just because the heart has an issue, does not mean you have to give up living or anything else. See what the doctor has to say.

DAN has articles on the condition in their dive medicine section. check them out.

Two words... Give DAN a call. ;-)

Don,

Thanks for the PM and the wake up call!
I didn't see that my post could have meant, and -because of how strongly I worded it- had to mean, "Don't give up diving!"
I truly meant, don't give up before exhausting all resources!
Sorry, that was one of those times I didn't put on my thinking cap.

CALL DAN!

:monkeydan Hi Kj, I was sorry to hear about your heart problem, don't let that ruin your love for the sport. I hope it all turns out o.k. for you. I know what it's like to love something and not be able to do it. It sucks but you need to go on. You are very lucky to live where you do. Hawaii is my favorite place of all.

I hope you are diving soon.

Take Care

Matt
