When I first started diving again, I said that I would count my training dives because I felt that they were contributing toward my proficiency in the water, and were giving me valuable information.

However, I changed that opinion. I now treat my pool sessions as "homework" and do not log them. They are personal time for me. I don't wear my computer for these dives and don't log them.

I don't log OW training dives in my personal log, although by the definition given above they "qualify".

I don't log Rescue training dives ... because for the most part they are short, unconscious diver recovery scenarios and not real dives.

I do log all other training dives ... both those I teach and those I take ...

You will find that you will learn more from those aborted dives (or very short dives)than from the 60' 50 minute ones.

Very true, I have 4 very short dives logged because they were extremely memorable.
Each one taught me a lesson I won't forget too soon.

The computer logs all my dives below 15 feet as that's how it's programmed. So I suppose if the aquarium is 15 feet deep it would count, haven't dove that yet.

As far as I'm concerned it's your personal logbook, log whatever you want, who cares?

Fun Diver:
For your personal dive log, everyone is going to do it different.. I would count any dive I make in open water, whether it is a training dive or not. I wouldn't record pool dives, is that what the instructor was thinking of?

No, he specifically mentioned the ow dives I did for my AOW. Just curious if this was only his opinion or SOP.

I log my open water dives, but training dives don't count toward the number of experience dives required between classes for some agencies.

I was told by an instructor that training dives don't count toward logged dives.
Is a 'training dive' a dive ? For sure, so log it.

I'm in agreement with Kimmie on this one ... it's strictly his opinion.

There are no "rules" about a dive log. The purpose of the log is more for your benefit than someone else's.

Now I'm just curious ... were there any learning objectives for your AOW dives? And if so, why would he not want you to log them?

An aquarium isn't 'open water' though. I think most agencies require the dives to be in open water.
