I was told by an instructor that training dives don't count toward logged dives.

I don't count the skin dive (I have students note it they just don't give it a number) or pool dives but all open water dives are part of your logged dive total whether they are training dives or fun dives.

For your personal dive log, everyone is going to do it different.. I would count any dive I make in open water, whether it is a training dive or not. I wouldn't record pool dives, is that what the instructor was thinking of?

According to PADI,

"For training purposes, an open water dive is a dive during which a student diver spends the majority of time at a depth of at least 5 metres/15 feet and:
a. breathes at least 1400 litres or 50 cubic feet of compressed gas.
OR
b. remains submerged for at least 20 minutes."

Obviously there are many other certifying agencies and opinions - but for me if you're not in a pool log it.

for me if you're not in a pool log it.

What if you didn't reach 15 feet? What if you didn't stay 20 minutes or use 50 cu ft?

If it's in open water, I log it. If you are in training, you have to meet the agency's standards to complete training, but the log book is yours, put in it what you want in it.

You will find that you will learn more from those aborted dives (or very short dives)than from the 60' 50 minute ones.
