Identity Theft & Internet Scams

Protecting your legal name is the first line of defense against nefarious people trolling the internet for their next victim. You may want to think twice about using yours as you member name unless you have a compelling reason like running a dive charter service or you write books.

With over 200,000 members, the next problem is finding a name that is available. Try this search in your favorite Internet search engine to see if the name you want is available:

site:scubaboard.com "name you want"

It's not a guarantee that the name is available but will find most. For example, let's say you want the name Captain Bob. Using quotation marks will prevent every occurrence with captain and bob from showing up in the results unless they are together.

Key Information
Advertising your legal name, date of birth, and where you live isn't far from posting your bank account number and that your key is under the mat.

Choosing a Password
Someone guessing your ScubaBoard password isn't as critical as the one to your bank but could lead to embarrassing mischief. Changing Your Password is easy and you can do it as frequently as you wish.

Password Management
Life online soon becomes cluttered with passwords. You might consider using a password manager app/program that stores your passwords in an encrypted format in the cloud. Most can also generate strong passwords and enter them for you.

You don't have to be an accomplished hacker to know that long passwords with a variety characters works best. A password like this would be impossible unless you are blessed with a photographic memory and can type 120 words a minute.

Location
The purpose of displaying your location on ScubaBoard is to give members an idea of the general part of the world you live in. This hint tells readers something about your perspective on local diving and can suggest cultural traits like what your first language. It isn't an open invitation to your backyard BBQ so precision isn't necessary.

Careful What You Post
It is understandable that you are proud of your gold coin collection but you might want to keep that to yourself. Even saying you keep it in a safety deposit box could make you an attractive target for scams and intimidation crimes. The same is true for sharing the great news that your LaFerrari Aperta just arrived before you and your family leave for a month in Palau.
