Actually I found in most lakes under 60 ft (not including Quarries) The water temp is much warmer than the air temp above....I look for temps in the mid 40's on the bottom, and colder as you go up, inverse to the summer diving. The first 6-8 feet is the worst......I usually communicate with my partner that when we get under, dont hesitate to get down a few feet if you sit in the first 6 feet you are more likely to not want to continue to dive . In Michigan, after Diving in Lake Michigan, I find Ice diving to be very similar in temps to Early summer Diving in the big lake.
