Hello,

Just wondering if any of you have taken the iantd deep air course. I would like to but just wanted to hear some more informations on it. Thanks

My understanding is that you don't want to take just Deep Air, you want to combine it with something else (Adv. Nitrox, Adv. Rec. Trimix, a tech Trimix course, etc.). A good IANTD instructor will be all over this. Their Deep Diver class (non-tech) is usually taught with Adv. Nitrox, Rec. Trimix, or Adv. Rec. Trimix (per the standards and procedures document).

Remember, "Friends don't let friends dive air".

I've done it in Australia (With nitrox). Yes you want to combine it with nitrox if you aren't already certified for that. I found it a challenging course. Of course that may have somthing to do with 3-4m of Bass Straight waves, 11 deg C water and only 2-3m vis.......

Well worth doing - best course I've done so far, you should learn a lot. Have fun.

I just completed the Deep Air / Adv. Nitrox class the two classes came bundled together, in my honest opinion IANTD is a very good agency with very knowledgeable instructors. The classroom portion was spent learning, and applying formulas to certian dives. The dive portion we did alot of skill training, like valve shutdowns, S-Drills, OOA, gear removal, lift bag deployment, deco bottle removal etc etc. The Adv. Nitrox we planned dives using EAN50 for deco gas, and followed the plan, "Plan the dive, Dive the plan" preformed deco stops, etc etc. These are two very good classes, then you can venture into the trimix area of diving if you so choose.

What would you like to know about it?

A friend of mine took Advanced Nitrox....appears he did not like having his mask off and air turned off at 135Ft in cold water....

Unless advanced nitrox is combined with another class like advanced recreational trimix, the max allowable depth is 130 ft. IANTD does not require and would probably frown on no mask drills at 135 though I can't think of where it says so in the standards.

To the original question of the thread, there is no IANTD class called deep air. The course that used to be "deep air" is essentually what is now called "deep diver" which has a max depth of 130 ft. "technical diver" I think used to be called technical nitrox and, taken alone, permits diving to 170 ft on air but, IMO, the best way to do it is to combine it with normoxic trimix. If you do it that way you won't have to ever dive "deep" on air. If you were to take advantage of the new recreational trimix classes you could go through the whole course progression without ever having an END below 80 ft.

Wouldn't it be great if they updated their logo to reflect this? :) While they were at it, they could work on the trim of that diver a little as well. :D

I do like that their classes are skills based (vs. adventure dives). I just wish they'd update their image.

I think I can safely say that there will be quite a bit of "updating" coming down the pike soon with IANTD. :D

Why would anyone contemplate doing a "Deep Air" course these days?

IMO I would do any dive deeper than 40m on trimix, and use nitrox for anything else.

Surely it would be better (and safer??) for you to do IANTD Adv Nitrox/Technical Diver, then go straight on to the Normoxic Trimix.

I would do anything these days to reduce the effects of narcosis, and diving deep air is no longer my idea of fun.

Just my 2p worth.
