That first one looks like Remington from around the "War of Northern Aggression" as it is called around here. My dad had one that looked kinda like your picture. It had no family stories behind it - not sure where he got it from. It was sold a few years ago for around $700. It had some non-authentic repairs, or it may have fetched more.
I've always been fascinated with big bore, long range shooting. Never had the time and/or money to get into it, but I can still appreciate it. Other than the .50 BMG the .338 LAUPA seems to get a lot of good reviews. And, as a price performer, the Savage M111 gets some good press as well, at around $1,400. Optics is a whole other story. Well, that's just silly. The president says gun laws stop crime. What are you gonna believe that stand up guy or a bunch of studies?
