The history of the lionfish is that when it showed up in the Bahamas, everyone went, "oh, cute" and thought nothing of it. It multiplied exponentially, and had decimated many reef's populations of aquarium and game fish.
The Floridians are advocating and urging the immediate kill of lionfish so that the population doesn't boom as it has in other places. Most people think that REEF is too slow in recognizing the extreme impact of this voracious and prolific preditor. The "take note and report" attitude allows many offspring to be borne.
