I Hurt Myself Today

Holy crap. That's really scarey. I have a nice little finger spool with 50 feet of line. It cost about $15. Cheap piece of equipment that can literally be a lifesaver. It's really hard to see someone's hand/arm...

I quickly grab my neon yellow sausage and hold it up in the air. Didn't have time to try and inflate it. My dive boat comes and gets me. No one says a word. Someone asks me how my dive was and I just say non-chalantly "Well, it was good...except I just got ran over by a big dive boat. Other than that, it was a nice dive."

The dive boat that ran me over was HUGE. Maybe that was what prevented me from being mince meat. I debated for several days whether to write about this on scuba board. Seemed the theme of the trip was "If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all." I'm telling you though, when it comes to diving, sheet happens and it happens fast!

For the love of all things holy. That is simply the end all, be all, of bad luck diving encounters. Ok, maybe it is actually the end all, be all, of good luck diving encounters that you didn't end up dead....but one way or the other there was some serious luck at work there and being who is involved, it must have been bad luck.

That's it, I'm sending that exorcist over immediately. You have apparently contracted one of those rare Cozumel curses that are floating around. Made fun of any voodoo witchdoctors lately? Maybe left one of their sons at the alter broken hearted or something?

Hit by a boat...twice. I'm literally speechless. Just...wow. Welcome back to Colorado...I'm surprised your pilot didn't have a heart attack on the trip back.

What dive operation were you using? Seems quite odd for a DM to leave a group like that, and even more odd for a professional to dive plan his way into deco.

I went on the 1PM afternoon dive boat. Which is fairly rare to have those regularly scheduled in Cozumel. So, those were my first dives on this particular day. Ergo...I had plenty of air and plenty of non-deco time available on computer. And, by golly, I was going to use it. And I did!

Next time, I will have a string on my sausage! First time I ever had to use the darn thing.

My sister just reminded me, that when we dove in Pampano, Florida at least one person in the group was given a dive flag to carry on the dive. When you were ready to surface you sent up the flag first. So many boats in the area. NO DM's go on any dives with you.

That sounds like a good piece of equipment to have.

My BC is a wing type with no pockets anywhere. I may be doing some reconfiguring on that scenario in the future!

I have a double ended clip - one end clipped to a hole on the spool and other end clipped to d ring on BCD. Do you have any d-rings?

Yes, I have two D rings. Becoming ever more crowded with asundry items. Flashlight, noisemaker, sausage, double ended computer clip, camera holder and so on. But, I want this spool now!

Forgot to add...I have one of those PADI underwater cert cards, as well, on my BCD. I figure it will help identify my body if need be!

It must of been that whale shark ride I took years ago, coming back to haunt me!

I have ascended away from the DM many times; haven't worried about it, but after reading this - I think I shall now. Calamity Mary, you should really post this in Near Misses under Accidents; could help others there.

If ascending without the DM and his floating, it's good to inflate on the SS and let it be the first thing to break the surface. Reels are nice, but one more big piece of gear. Some do carry 15 ft of twine attached to theirs so they can send it up from the SS.

I have always just stuck my arm up when I ascended away. I think I will inflate my Sausage on SS to send up a few feet above me at least, but - the 15-20 foot of line may well be worth the trouble. Need to practice that.

I think it is a good idea after that experience. I know I will think twice before ascending without some kind of marker device. And we know that even those can be worthless with lots of inattentive boat drivers around!
