seems to me that they went out and send a mass advertisement via PM for their "product".....

To me, it met the definition of spam because it was an unwanted advertisement that I did not ask for information for via PM.

According to SB TOS, it meets the definition of SPAM they have set out.

from http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/faq.php?faq=tos_items#faq_tos_define_spam

On ScubaBoard we combine the commonly held definitions of SPAM into one concrete statement. SPAM is, as a general rule, a message sent in any amount of a commercial or non-commercial nature which is unsolicited. More specifically, SPAM generally consists of an advertisement of some nature which is sent directly to a user or users or is posted in a forum or forums.

SB could also ban them for this based on their TOS as the user is a new user who just came here to SPAM PM's. (they only had 2 posts at the time of the PM's).

The punishment for spamming a user or the board varies based on the severity of the SPAM. Users with no prior posts who blatantly post SPAM messages to multiple forums or PM multiple users may be banned without further warning. Users in good standing who send out a limited number of messages may simply be given a warning or a short suspension. There is no such thing as ÅÈood SPAM on our board and all members, regardless of their status, may be banned immediately for spamming the board in any manner even if it is with just one message or post. As a general rule we try to take into account the nature of all messages, commercial versus private and the degree of the abuse. But to this issue, simply do not send users messages containing advertising of services, goods, links or personal ads they arenÃÕ asking for!

EDIT: That being said, the pm's were diving releated, so I don't really think we should kick them off the board, but perhaps some moderator should send them a PM explaining that there is a better way to fish up business.

let us know how it is--I know getting out as a lone diver can be difficult in south florida in this climate---I would be interested in giving them a try

Ah, delicious irony; you have made my morning, thank you.

The link you posted to the Urban Dictionary contains the definition I listed....

Really?? :lotsalove: As you appear rather astute, you probably noticed the urban dictionary contains a rating system and the majority of folks disagree with the definition you chose to reference.

I guess it's true, small things DO amuse small minds but I'm always happy to make an :mooner::clown:'s day and you're welcome :)

I still fail to see the problem with it, that's what the delete key is for. They were offering a valid deal, it's not like they were asking for your bank account information to transfer your newfound Nigerian wealth.

it's still commerical unsolicited spam via PM regardless of whether it's dive related or not.

If they want to post a deal, that's what the "Hot Deals" forum is for.

And the folks from Nigeria have promised me that the check is in the mail :D

They'll mail the check once you've sent them the good faith money to show you're honest.

My definition of SPAM: Spam is the abuse of email to send irrelevant and unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately that I would not have otherwise requested.

You can call it what you want, I'm still happy to have been sent the offer.

That's great, but clearly not everyone is happy to receive unsolicited PMs. Look, the point is, this doesn't scale. What if EVERY operator on SB sent everyone offers via PM? I know I'd be pissed having to wade through all that crap.

In any case, there already exists a mechanism for announcing your trips. You can find it in the various Marketplaces here on SB.

The reefs are bleaching...
Sharks are being finned...
Not mention what is happening to whales...
Commercial fishing is raping the ocean....
Polition....
Red tide...
Dive operators can barely hold on thanks to global economic issues...

The list goes on and on..

...but dammit! Pro Dive sent me an email advertisment!!!

I'M IN AN UPROAR!!!!!

Where is Net Doc?!?!!? Throw them off the board!!!

Jeeze...maybe its time for some perspective.

By the way if you are an op with a good deal PLEASE PM me and let me know.

Those of you no longer wanting to receive awesome deals on diving feel free to send them to me, I'll be happy to save you the trouble of weeding through those pesky PM's by taking your free and discounted dives.:crafty:

Ya know, you make a point - and I'm still pissed I did not get one!

To me, real spam is junk, BS, a scam, something I'm not interested in, etc - someone wants to give me a legit deal like a deep discount on a dive trip - assuming I don't have to hear a timeshare presentation, or sign up for dance lessons, or join a travel club to get it - its not spam to me.

And yeah, maybe we need to lighten up a little - and use the delete button more.

(If I sat down and thought about all the "free" viagra offers I get on a weekly basis, I'd start to get really parinoid - just hit delete - or the stock tips; wow)
