I do not see what incenses you so much. Do you think no one should have the right to search shipwrecks for valuables? Sorry, but I disagree completely. Do you think no one should have an exclusive right to a given shipwreck? Then I agree, but not to the point of getting all steamed up over it. Or is it something else entirely?

I have the same question. How is this any different than bringing up china off a wreck?

Or is this the whole "let the dead rest"/undersea graveyard thing again? (There is merit to that, but you'd have to be pissed about the adrea doria, u-869, and about 10000 other shipwrecks that are dived too...)

Unless they're planning on destroying the wreck in their search for gold , i really don't see what should get our blood boiling.

Doc Intrepid:
I think he means that the concept of hunting treasure is exciting, not intensely annoying...

Blood a pumping not blood boiling then, eh? ;)

Yes, I think he means exciting, not angry. Heck, I'm happy to find an old anchor, nevermind gold coins!

I hear the wreck is about 50 miles offshore and in about 270 feet of water. Oh well, thats further and deeper than I'll ever want to go!

How will they handle that anyway? Will they do it all with divers? To search a wreck that size, that deep with divers would take a LONG, LONG time given the decompression schedules that would be required.

Not angry by any means, jealous is more accurate. I am a finders keepers kind of guy. Sorry if I was misunderstood. I just find it amazing that there could be up to $10B in reletively shallow water right off our coast. P.

I knew that he had that arrest on the republic for a while, he's pretty active on the NEwreckdivers list. I was sorta surprised by the article only in that I didn't realize he didn't have salvage permission yet.

well I guess what is a bummer is that if say someone else found this wreck and the booty you'd have nothing to show for it except jail time. That's kinda lame. I think if you find it then you should get the rights. Not the rights to maybe find it.
