I love my 120's

the 120's are big tanks the 4 inches doesnt sound like much untill they are on your back. if your atleast 6' or taller you will be great if your shorter then that then the length may become an issue. Some shorter people are ok with it some not. If your worried about gas management and your shorter then 6' I would suggest going with the worthington 119's same length as the 100's just little wider and actually hold more air just barely but they do. I personally Dive with the 100's and like them. Especially when you go to double them up much more manageable.

I have been going through many of the same things.

I dive an AL80 and I alway have lots of gas left after a dive. I'm a DM and when I go with students I can get 2 dives from a tank with safety--and almost a third. It really annoys me that I keep having to waste so much air (and switch tanks so much). I used about 25ft of air on a typical class dive so after 2 dives I have 1100psi (30cuft) remaining. Moving to the 120 I'd get 4 dives and have 20 cuft left. That turns a 7 tank change weekend into a 3 or four changer.

The height of the tanks is a concern on land too. When I carry an 80 by the valve I have to shrug my shoulders to keep it off the floor so a 120 would certainly need to go on the shoulder. On the flip side of that I would no longer need to carry 2 tanks to the fill station as often. I think I might get some of those nylon carry straps/handles.

I always dive wet in cold water so the weight isn't an issue in the water. I tried a steel 100 and was able to remove most of my back pocket weights

My final point is about fill pressure. Just ask where you get your fills, I was concerned about this myself but both my prefered LDS and the quarry I go to most often can do hp fills so for me its not an issue.

Did I miss anything? Can anyone think of other issues?

Otherwise at this point I think I'm going to ask Santa for an X7-120

Standard AL80 is just short of 26 inches. I'd go for the X8-119 if you're having to shrug your shoulders with the 80's... They're 2 inches shorter, but still trim out well and sink... I'd see if you can try one of the bigger tanks first... LP95's are about the same as the x8-119's and are usually fairly easy to find

That's an interesting idea. I've been against the 8" tanks because of the people who complain about dive boats not liking them. Also having to adjust my BC straps when I switch from my big tank to an 80 was not exciting to me--but with the big tank how often will I really need to switch? That little bit of hassle seems to outweigh what I gain from getting a tank I can carry.

Thanks!

Most dive boats now do have space for 8 inch diameter tanks. The boom of the 130's started that. I'm thinking the dive boats that only allow 7 inch tanks, are probably the ones that won't like you making repetitive dives on one tank either... Don't quote me, but that's a hunch. In that case, just bring the AL80's with you
