The BOV makes a lot of sense for a first-line bailout, but a BOV second stage failure is a consideration that a switching manifold or QDs don't address.
Ah, reading comprehension 101... See where I said "second stages??? I have the option of using the bail outs using the QD (pop and plug), or the second stage that is already attached with their QD. I have options. They are simple options, but they are options none the less.
All my bailout second stages use the same QD as my Shrimp.

I caught it, I just figured that enough different options to cover all the bases was exceeding my "too much crap to carry unless I'm being paid" threshold. Did I mention that I'm a mercenary that way? :)

I haven't had it in the water yet but trying everything on dry so far is promising and my initial observations are:
  • The gag strap does need to be too tight to stop the BOV falling out of my mouth when I completely relax my bite and there still seems to be a reasonable seal!
  • The best strap position (so far) seems to be the mask strap underneath my (Lavacore) hood and the gag strap over the top of the hood and positioned just above the mask strap on the back of my head.
  • Used in the above manner it seems likely it will take an instant to flick the rear of the strap up and remove the BOV if I bailout to OC.

It's also not hard to pull it down around your neck...that's the way I like to do it, anyway
