In zero visibility diving, where you have a very hard time reading you pressure gauge i have found it beneficial to keep your eyes closed. In conditions like this your eyes can't see anything, but you can often see the silt swirling around you. This swirling can make you feel a little dizzy or disorient you. If you keep your eyes closed this isn't a problem.

Speaking of gators - did a cave dive at Peacock 1 in Florida a few months back. There was a five foot gator in the pond. While inspecting the site he stayed on his side of the pond. By time we got back with the gear and ready to enter, he was about 8 feet from the cavern entrance. No problem, we can share, I said. The water at the entrance was quite murky (about 5 foot viz). It was a long descent wondering if that gator might get interested and appear out of the gloom.

...I've been on dives where you were "flying on instruments"!

Whoa, that is a familiar term!
It is interesting how much IFR flight and Zero Viz diving have in common.
My AOW actually has helped teach me to trust my instruments in an aircraft!

Anyway, like everyone else has stated, just doing it will help overcome anxiety. I have lost my buddy a few times in Blue Lake. Thanks to a good dive plan we reunited without a hitch.

HCICSMOA water is pretty standard in Texas Lakes and more than a few have critters. Best I can say is watch where your bubbles flow to maintain a sense of up and down and take a compass. Have your new dive buddy carry hotdogs to feed the fish and you will have no trouble with the gators.<g>
