how about some general pointers on what to look for when choosing equipment for the first time? I have the mask, snorkel, fins, booties and gloves from my OW cert and would like to start investing in a regulator and BCD next.

You should ask yourself these questions:

Do I just want gear for travel - warm water?

Am I going to do any cold water diving?

Am I going to be a recreational diver or go into tech.?

How comfortable am I in the water and specifically on the surface?

Depending on your answers, it will help narrow down the gear you need.
