You can avoid scammers and lots of frustration by following these common-sense rules:

  • Buy from our advertisers! New gear from a reputable company comes with new warranties and you are supporting those who support ScubaBoard. The money you tried to save in buying used gear may not be worth the hassle. In the same regard, be careful of those listed in our Google Ads. Most are legit, but we do not vet them and have no idea how scrupulous they are.
  • Deal locally and meet in person! Follow this one rule and avoid 99% of scam attempts.
  • Never ever wire funds! This includes Zelle, Western Union, Moneygrams, Cashier's Checks or any other wire service. Anyone who asks you to do so is a scammer. If you meet in person, use cash. If you must use the mail, use PayPal and list it as a sale or auction and not as a "gift".
  • Fake cashier's checks and money orders are common so don't accept them! Banks will cash them and then hold you responsible for the funds when they are discovered weeks later.
  • ScubaBoard is not involved in any transaction! We do not handle payments, guarantee transactions, provide escrow services, offer "buyer protection", or "seller certification". Any suggestion otherwise is a lie.
  • ScubaBoard offers this free service with absolutely no guarantees! We will not get in the middle of any transaction: it is yours and yours alone to make sure it's good for you. We assume no liability for anything posted here and using this indicates that you know and have read all of the rules of the marketplace and that you assume all risks associated with doing business with strangers.
  • Never give out your financial information or passwords! This includes bank account numbers, your social security number, eBay/PayPal info or the like.
  • Avoid any deals involving shipping or escrow services! Only scammers "guarantee" a transaction in this way.
  • If a deal is too good to be true: it usually is. Don't get involved in anything that sounds too good or too easy. Scammers rely on your greed to make their money.
  • Report unsolicited DMs advising you to contact someone at an e-mail address. They are not your friend: they are a scammer! Please read the next post!
  • If you get scammed, please let us know. Report the user, post a harsh review, let the world know that you've been scammed.

I need to repeat this one line:
Never ever wire funds!

If you get an unsolicited DM from someone trying to sell something to you, PLEASE REPORT THEM!!! Here is an attempted scam and was reported just today. I took the liberty of replacing the email with ????

Hello, if the other seller doesn't have it anymore i have it for sale, i can't figure out how to send images on here if you don't mind you can send me an email to ????@gmail.com i will send all necessary details needed

They try to sound like they're helping you out, when they just want to scam, scam, scam! Sometimes it's their email and sometimes it's to some buddy. DON'T FALL FOR IT!!!

Here is yet another reported DM from the very same user. They even used a different email from the one in their profile. It doesn't matter, they are obviously a scammer. This is what the scammer sent:

Hello, i have the Genesis DPV for sale, i can't figure out how to send images on here if you don't mind you can send me an email to ????@gmail.com i will send all necessary details needed
Hope to hear from you soon
