I'm in Cozumel visiting my wife for 11 days. She's here for the summer, alone, by herself. She goes and comes as she pleases and feels very safe.

Ideally leave all your jewelry at home. The backs of ear rings come off, rings get loose and bands break on expensive watches. You can rent a safe in your room or at the front desk for a few dollars a week. Security if you feel the need.

Be aware of your surroundings and lock things in the trunk of your car if you are sightseeing or shopping.

And Marg feel free to drop by the house. We'll show you the new shop we built in the back.

everyone who travels *anywhere* has a story about valuables lifted from checked luggage, theft from the hotel room, pick pockets or something like that. you should always take precautions when traveling anywhere. i make certain to keep all my luggage with me, and keep in front of me where i can keep an eye on it, haul my carry-on into the airport bathroom stall with me, put wallets+passports in pockets that zip up or would be difficult to casually pick-pocket, etc. not letting your luggage out of your sight isn't just about all the silly terrorism security theater...

I just wondered if there were any safety concerns?
........should I leave my wedding rings home?

Perhaps I've misunderstood.....is this two completely different topics? :eyebrow:

Just got home from Cozumel yesterday. While I am sure it can be unsafe just as anywhere, I have never felt uncomfortable or ever in danger. The people are warm and gracious. I probably would not ever wander off into the less populated areas or put on a drunk that would leave me staggering down the block at 5am in the morning. Other than that, go and have a wonderful time. Diving is worldclass. The food is fantastic and it only costs about $7.00 to take a taxi from one end of the district to the other!

I've been living in Cozumel for over 6 years now and feel safer here than any other place I've lived. Although probably not really advisable, I still often leave my front door unlocked when I go to the local store and have no problem walking home on my own in the early hours.

Cozumel was even named "Island of Peace" last year because of its safe and peaceful reputation. (Google "cozumel island peace" to find more about that award)

Of course, all the advice above is great and you should still be sensible and don't take any unnecessary risks, but by and large Cozumel is one of the safest places you'll ever have the fortune to visit! Enjoy!

It will be our first time going and I just wondered if there were
any safety concerns? Not bringing any jewelry but should I leave my wedding rings home?

Like everyone has said, Coz is a pretty darn safe place. As for the wedding rings, I always wear mine just from habit - I have no worries about theft. Diving is a different issue - the hubby lost his ring on Santa Rosa wall as apparently, it was a bit lose on his finger and he never felt it fall off.

As you are seeing from these posts, COZ is a safe place. There is one unsafe thing I encountered while there. Walking back to the resort at night, the sidewalk has cracks in them and if not careful you'll wind up on you butt.

I felt much safer walking around Cozumel alone than I do here in Orlando. Enjoy, be sensible, and have fun!

And I thought this thread was going to be about diving to 150 feet on an aluminum 80 and going into deco, which does seem to be more common in Coz than elsewhere.
