It will be our first time going and I just wondered if there were
any safety concerns? Not bringing any jewelry but should I leave my wedding rings home?

Cozumel is very safe. Take the same precautions you would take anywhere else and you should be fine. Flashing expensive jewelry or wads of cash anywhere is not really a good idea but especially not good in places which are generally low income.

If the rings slip off easily, I would leave them at home so you don't lose them in the ocean. (Beat Murphy at his own game.) Otherwise, there's no issue about wearing them here.

the only thing I know for sure that isn't safe is riding those scooters, many people get into accidents on them.

Ditto on the comments above. We stayed at the Blue Angel last week which is about 1 mile south of downtown and 1 mile north of the International cruise ship terminal. We walked to & from downtown one evening for dinner and to the cruise ship terminal south of town one afternoon just for the heck of it and never felt concern unduly at risk. In the evenings it seemed like the young locals would drive their mopeds and hang out on the sea wall. We rented a jeep one day and circled the island. I never felt threatened.

I was there in the middle of April. Stayed at Villa Aldora (1-2 miles from town) and walked everywhere. Day and night, including a couple really late nights. Never felt uncomfortable, let alone threatened.

We have never felt threatened in Cozumel, even when walking through some of the residential areas further inland. I live in Washington and I feel safer in Cozumel than walking many of the streets in Seattle. Starting to see a little bit of gang tagging on some walls but not too much. Other than that I have seen no signs of gangs or drug issues. Very friendly people who live there. Honestly, the only folks I have had issues with there have been a few of the "ugly American" tourists.

Was there a few weeks ago - same thoughts here. The worst sights were a few drunk/loud Americans.
