from wikipedia:
"The endothelium (inner lining) of blood vessels uses nitric oxide to signal the surrounding smooth muscle to relax, resulting in vasodilation and increasing blood flow.[24] Sildenafil (Viagra) is a drug that uses the nitric oxide pathway. Sildenafil does not produce nitric oxide, but enhances the signals that are downstream of the nitric oxide pathway by protecting cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) from degradation by cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) in the corpus cavernosum, allowing for the signal to be enhanced, and thus vasodilation."

Just as we are discussing workouts - I've been avoiding any intensive workout after diving, but understand that may not be necessary? A few hours after getting out of the water is enough? I don't do more serious dives than ~30 minutes deco with 50% and 50/85

I had to do the same thing this morning, I hadn't heard of them until today either. If it's the supplement, there's no nitric oxide in it so there's nothing at all to worry about aside from the deceptive labeling. On the off chance that the OP has gotten hold of some nitric oxide gas there would be more to talk about.

Best regards,

There are a few different types of Pre workouts out there, Niacin based ones are the most common these days. However NO Has been a staple in them for decades now (back in the early and mid 2000’s your typical Pre workout was called something similar to NOXplode, NO Limit etc). you really need to look at what your sups contain bc there’s a good chance that even the current ones include something that generates/introduces NO. This lets them use less of the niacin, other B vitamins (which are great but makes you jittery and feel like there’s little flaming spiders crawling on you if you do too much), and aminos and still get strong vasodilation.

Typically your tip off is that they advertise that it “promotes vascularity”

I give myself recovery time after diving, period. Like I’ll dive on Saturday, have Saturday and Sunday as rest days programmed into my workout schedule, and then get back at it Monday fully off gassed.

Agreed on minimizing post-dive lifting. I'd also be concerned with pre-dive tribonucleation and the creation of microbubble seeds. Research has shown that pre-dive aerobic exercise actually lowers post-dive VGE, but not aware of research on lifting heavy or how long before a dive the lifting should be avoided.

There truly is a lot to be learned on here! I always assumed I was allergic to "something" in certain (pre)workout formulas due to that feeling!

the tingle feeling in your skin is from the Beta-Alanine…most folks love the feeling once they get used to it.

I did some reading on these supplements and also double-checked my own knowledge with one of our providers who is a well-known expert on nitric oxide production and effects. The evidence that the supplements produce any significant vasodilation when taken orally is mixed at best:

L-arginine-induced vasodilation in healthy humans: pharmacokinetic–pharmacodynamic relationship This one showed no change in vasodilation with 6 grams (6000 mg) of L-arginine taken orally.

Oral administration of l-citrulline alters the vascular delivery of substances to rat skeletal muscles Note that in this one, the rats were given 300 mg/kg of L-citrulline. The oral supplements that I found had 2000-3000 mg per dose.

Supplementation is also not without risk: L-arginine: Does it lower blood pressure?

All that said, to answer your original question, the impact on dissolved nitrogen in your system after taking these supplements would be negligible. If there IS vasodilation (and that is a big 'if' given the evidence I reviewed), there would be a theoretical risk if the timing was such that you were vasodilated during a dive but the effects wore off before you began decompressing. Again though, it's not likely that these are producing any clinically significant vasodilation.

:rofl3::rofl3::rofl3: Yes, the best part of shooting up back tar... is after you get used to it.

Seriously though, it's typically called a "skin flush" in the side-effects list, google "niacine flush".

More accurately, the best part about shooting up black tar is the first time you shoot up….then you spend the rest of your life trying to chasing that first high…and eventually die
