I just dropped my one set off to my LDS. He quoted me $25 labor + parts kits..... and I dive SP's..... no warranty, no grease as they are on a mk-17..... (w/ 2 - 250v's)

Greetings Antagonist regs are essential to diving!
The care and service of them is a real concern needing to be a matter of diligence.
A spare set of regs has come in handy many times for me personally and my buddies as well.
At service time it can be a pain to have multiple sets however if your diving demands several sets then it goes with the territory.

Hog regs are great regs that closely resemble Apex to the point of using the same rebuild kit.
I have used both and own Oceanic, Atomic, Hollis, as well some are better than others at things but all are great regs.
Almost all of them cost more than Hog's and cost more at service time to under warrantee or not.
There is a reason that Hog regs are growing leaps and bounds with many switching their entire gear out.
Be advised though diving is always a gear driven sport that requires service and care of life support gear.
This is not always cheap nor should it be.

How many reg sets are enough?

One more than I currently have.

I like my Hogs. They route nicely for doubles and sidemount too. I just wish they had come out sooner, before I bought a pair of expensive Zeagles as my first set of doubles regs.

I presently own five regs...a SR1, 2 X Zeagle Flathead VI (doubles) and 2 X HOG limited edition (stages). In all likelihood, if I acquire anymore regs...they will be HOG for the reasons stated previously by others. Don't get me wrong, I love my non HOG regulators but it sure be nice to just have one brand to look after and do it myself.

How many reg set-ups is enough? ... I have 1 reg set up so far, but i am interested in purchasing another one (MK25/S600).

Antagonist,

You asked this in the Basic Scuba forum, so I'll reply with this in mind.

I learned to rebuild/service Scubapro Mk 5, 7, and 10 first stages and Adjustable and Balanced Adjustable second stages before I purchased my very first regulator (Mk 10 - Balanced Adjustable). I was extremely satisfied owning only this single regulator for rec diving. My save-a-dive kit contained the two or three required service tools and the equivalent of a couple of rebuild kits for each stage. This sufficed for week-long rec diving and primitive camping trips to Missouri and Arkansas fresh-water lakes (e.g. Bull Shoals Lake, Table Rock Lake, etc.) during spring, summer, and fall when water temps weren't terribly cold.

(It was only when I began diving overhead environments and extremely cold water and deco diving that I began purchasing additional regulators.)

So, the short answer is, it's possible you'll ever only need the single reg set-up you already own!

Hope this helps.

Safe Diving,

Ronald

You can only breathe off one at a time. That said, I just bought two new (to me) sets as "extras" / "backups" so I can take them apart and learn to service these things myself.
