But the Davy Crocket went out of infantry units just before I got to Germany. Always felt a lottle sorry for the artillery types.

"OD in color, bulbus in shape...." I havn't heard
of a Davy Crocket in 40 years!! I had to guard a
bunch of them at Fort Knox to keep the Cuban
Forces in Exile [5000 nutty Cubans] from trying
to steal them and attack Cuba. They were in the
basic training center [USATCA] til they revolted and
were shipped to Ft. Jackson. They didn't have the
Davy Crockets with them!

The most insane weapon ever purchased by the
US military!!

Imagine a jeep. On the jeep is a stovepipe
about 5' long. On the end of the stovepipe
is something that looks like a giant tadpole
with little fins on the bottom. The tadpole
is a .5 kt nuclear warhead. When fired it
flys slowly thru the air until it explodes on
an enemy target. The poor clowns that fired
the thing are cowering in a foxhole waiting
for the blast. That's what a Davy Crocket is.

I've seen one fired but without the nuclear
warhead....plain HE.

A more.....stupid....weapon cannot be imagined.:bonk:

I think, by the 1980s, the Davy Crocketts had been replaced by the tactical nuclear projectiles for the 155mm howitzers. ' Same "payload" but a longer range.

Jarhead

PS: Also a "last resort" weapon, as the howitzer was un-useable after one-shot.
