How many buy used scuba gear on eBay?

...I'm another E-Bay addict.....there are some amazing deals to be had........in the last week I picked up a new-in-the-box Aqualung Titan reg for $40 (that's not a typo!)......and an essentially new Scubapro LP 76 twinset (new Scubapro isolation manifold with DIN-yoke modular valves/new Highland bands, tanks "slightly used") for $450....by comparison, 6 months ago I paid full retail at my LDS for a comparable twinset a total of $1300---OMS LP 85's/Highland bands/OMS manifold...+ $100 tax, so that totaled almost $1400....versus $450 for virtually the same thing....it's hard to pass up something when it's only 1/3 the price!

Wow, are those prices right? :wacko:

My LDS sells PST E8 130's for $330 each, and then the Highland bands and Halcyon manifold will be $393 together, so that would make a very nice E8 130 doubles ~$1,050 plus tax. PST LP80's would make that ~$840 plus tax, with PST LP 95's ~$900.

Are OMS tank/manifolds much more expensive, or is your LDS screwing you?

I saw that Titan but you had already beaten me to it with the "Buy It Now" option. Titans are nice. I couldn't believe that someone would sell it for $40.

I grabbed a like new Poseidon Jetstream 2nd stage with "buy it now" for $40.

ebay's great if you know what you are doing and do your homework. You WILL encounter a bad ebayer who tries to screw you at some point if you ebay enough, but that's just part of life. With all the amazing deals I've gotten, it more than covers my losses.

Things I've bought on ebay: manifold, 45lb wing, DUI 400G and 200G undergarments, lift bag, spool, Apeks regs, Scubapro SPG, backplate, drysuit, booties, watch, etc.

....yeah, I couldn't resist getting the Titan....not at that price. I have a dive buddy at work who has minimal dive gear, so I'm thinking about making that a Christmas gift to him (his wife doesn't dive, so it's not real easy for him to justify gear purchases to her) as we're planning to dive the Flower Gardens March 2004.

paulwlee, in answer to your question......OMS stuff is more expensive....but that purchase was part of my 'policy' of supporting some of my LDS's, and cultivating relationships with them. I buy some of my stuff at LDS's at 'retail'...other things I buy on the WWW ....it depends. That $1300 purchase was at a 'tech' shop, who's owner is a very experienced instructor (I took a cave diving class in Akumal a month ago with him)....so when I buy there I benefit from his vast experience.

Was I 'screwed'? .....well, I paid 'retail' that time but have received 'value-added' services as well...so I considered it a 'fair' exchange....sometimes 'retail' is worth the price

I just love ebay - and not just for scuba gear. It's one of the many on line options I check when making a purchase of any kind. Car parts, computer equipment, memorabilia, camera equipment - if it's being sold somewhere, you'll be able to find it on ebay. You do have to be careful and do your homework though. Some stuff just isn't worth it, epsecially with shipping - AL80's come immediately to mind.

For scuba gear I've bought my Balance BC, Aqualung Legend regulator and XLC octopus, Mares X-Vision mask and my Suunto Vyper all brand new off ebay. I've also got some smaller stuff - a wrist slate, snorkel, spring straps, wetsuit, watch and other assorted sundries. Even with the shipping figured in, everything has been cheaper than any other online outlet, let alone from a brick and mortar store.

I've also sold items successfully on ebay as well, recycling some of my original gear as I've upgraded up. My favorite sales to date were a no-name regulator and a mini SPG. They came attached to a tank someone had been using for air tools that I picked up at a garage sale for $60. I sold them both for $57 making the tank vitually free.

It's also fun just to peruse the weird stuff category to see what people are selling. You do have give folks credit for originality - the Ghost In A Bottle and the spinoffs were a hoot. My current off the wall favorite is

My recent purchases have included:

*A beautiful yellow-rimmed black rubber oval mask for $3.25*
*A US Diver Conshelf-12 metal 2nd stage plus a pressure gauge for $6.50.*
*A pristine circa 1980 Tabata TR-30 set including a 4000 psi service, swivel-top, balanced, flow-through piston 1st stage, two 2nd stages, an inflator hose and gauges for $69.*

I received the Tabata (see attached photo) in the mail last night. I put it on a tank, heard no leaks, and it breathes great. Cool.

A Tabata like this was my first regulator.

Not only is it a Christmas gift to him, you are also giving yourself a dive buddy! That reminds me of my giving my brother a birthday present of a double-hose Dacor that I got off ebay. He likes the regulator and it gave me another person to dive my old AquaLungs with.
