How does a new diver select the right gear?

I spent a great deal of time on this forum seeking advice about many things, including equipment, and if I had chance to do it all over again, I wish someone would have started me off by suggesting I subscribe to and review (If possible) back issues of Scuba Diving magazine issued by PADI. Lots of great equipment reviews and destination reviews.

I think the technical term for these "reviews" is content marketing...
