How do you let people know you are diving?

Hey folks when out diving with a buddy or a group of divers whats the norm regarding notifying others of your dive ?
By others I mean people not directly involved in the dive.
With small boats here in NZ what we are soposed to do is advise someone of our plan and departure time then call them on our return.
Do you apply the same principle with your diving? I guess I mean more shore diving than boat diving.
I might be a bit paranoid but I call my wife just before I go in for a dive with where we are going at the dive site (if not with her) ,thee estimated dive time and then call her once we are out of the water.

About a day before I leave for the airport I send emails to my aquaintances to let them know that I'm headed for the Upper Keys. Same thing when I get back.

shoot texts to my better half and best friend. They know when I'm diving, but I'll send one about half an hour before I jump in then another when I get out

I let my wife know where I am diving and what time to expect me home. If there are any changes to that plan a phone call is made with the changes. Usually the changes are going out for food

This is perfect timing, I was going to post a tip I had from hiking however I could not find the site anymore (I will look some more) Its a website that you create your plan, and type into it what time you should be back. If you do not get back to your computer/phone to disable the alert it will send a e-mail saying you have missed your check in. I found this to be a great safety tool..... If I find the link I will repost.

Be careful about posting too much information about when you will be out of town on a public forum or venue. Could be taken advantage of by some unscrupulous people.

I notify them by asking them to come diving with me.

Seriously, it all depends on your comfort level. I like diving with a buddy -- that way they know (or should!) where I am at all times and can help out in case of trouble.

Locally, I let my wife know about when shore dive #1 should end and call her when it does, also saying when the 2nd one should end. Then call & say done for the day. If I have a fatal accident she can do nothing anyway, but if I am lost at sea the lack of a call would help.

I usually contact my clubs diving officer to let him know what our plans are then i give him a call once im out the water, But that's the rules I have to inform him.

Sometimes I also phone the coastguard, let them know i have x amount of divers going in at site x and tell them the registration number of whatever vehicle im in and when i expect to be out then i phone them once im out to let them know im safe. I usually give myself an extra hour on my estimate of how long i will be before i phone back since if it gets past the time i said i would be out and i still haven't called them it could end up with a search and rescue operation being launched
