Be careful about posting too much information about when you will be out of town on a public forum or venue. Could be taken advantage of by some unscrupulous people.
I'd love to see anyone break into my place--actually its rather fun watching them try.

soonerwink: Very good point I am glad you mentioned that, I am still looking for the link to the website I'm talking about, however it actually is more of an alert vs. forum.

You type in your plan and estimated time of return, and it will not alert anyone untill you have not "checked in" electronically. It would then send an e-mail/text/call whomever you put on your emergency contact list.

This was great for the outdoors, and is just added peace of mind for diving because in our sport an e-mail may be too late in an out of air situation..... but would be great for a broke down boat/car/stranded situation on/in the water.

If anyone knows the site I am talking about please feel free to chime in, I am having a heck of a time finding it.

It is critical to let somone other than than the diving group know where you are, when you you will be diving, when you will return , and any other important information. Family, friends, shore support, local beach guards or marina personnel, or someone can be easlily found and notified. When I take a party diving from shore, even just for fun, we always have a "shore guy" along, too. If a boat excursion, the marina knows we are out and someone always stays on the boat. Its just common sense and it is a big safety factor.

Dennis --I get your point but whats your opinion of someone not directly involved in the dive being notified. Ie beyond the "shore guy" or "boat guy"?

It occurred to me that PADI could add a very usefull feature by having a dive register. Maybee dreaming for smaller places but for places like the USA and other bigger centres I could imagine a call to an 0800 (freecall) number -give your card number, location and end dive time and if you don't call back an allert is raised.

Greetings fellow SB'ers I usually use FB to alert the buddies across the internet but my wife knows I am diving and when to expect me back.
My usual dive buddy knows the dive I am planning even if he is not along if it is anything advanced in nature.
I follow whatever rules any particular site requires.
It is better to be wise and plan ahead rather than sorry and unsafe!

I don't have a wife, so I don't notify anybody. Most of my friends assume that if they don't hear me talking, I must be underwater somewhere ...

When I'm cave diving in No. FL, my mother usually requests that I give her a call at the end of the day. I do it out of courtesy, since she truly cares about my well being. Most of the time, it is just a "I'm still around" type call while we are waiting in a restaurant. She appreciates it & I appreciate that she cares!

I tell my wife the night before or sometimes early in the morning before I go. First thing she asks is who am I going with. I say nobody, or sometimes I have a buddy.
I had friend years ago that would be scared to tell his wife he was going diving because she hated it. Once I picked him up at 0600 at his house and he told me we needed to be extra quiet so we wouldn't wake her up. Just as we were loading the last of his things his wife comes out the front door in her bath robe and throws a wadded up piece of paper at him, calls him an explitive, shoots me the stink eye, and returned into the house slamming the door behind her. He said "that didn't go over well"
Apparently he was too scared to tell her he was going diving so he left her a note on the kitchen table and she woke up and found it.
She used to hate me because I was the A-hole that used to get him to go diving.

A year later he bought a Harley and kept it at his work for three weeks before he brought it home and showed her. And he thought diving was bad!
Holy ****!!.
I'm sure glad I had nothing to do with that!

In addition to letting the wife know where and when I'll be diving I also leave her a list of EVERYTHING that goes in to the water with me b/c IIRC the USCG bases their search pattern on what the KNOW you have and I want to get found. I also always add a little note telling her to buy a nice boat if I get lost at sea with the life insurance money.
