My wife and my daughter know when and where I dive. I call them both when I get on dry land. Also, my LDS usually knows as I stop by there to see if anyone wants to go with me.

I do a lot of kayaking in the Everglades and the Keys and I tell them about those trips and call when I'm back on dry land also.

My brother, who does not dive or kayak has asked me which I think will get me first, a shark or a gator. I tell him it will be a little old lady in a Lexus on the way to the put in.

A number of the places I dive (boats, lakes, etc.) have you fill out a "who-to-contact" sheet. I also dive with one DAN tag around my neck and one on the drysuit zipper, which lists medical information + contacts and phone numbers. I solo dive a lot, so when cave diving I fill out a sheet and leave it on my dash board that has my dive plan and contact phone numbers. I call my wife at the end of the day, if on multiple-day trips and when I get into cell range on a boat. You have to figure out what works for you.

Just a quick call before and after you dive, the day before i tell my parents or my girlfriend that I'm going diving and where. It's as simple as that.

A diver once posted - sorry, cannot remember who -- that he put a note on the dash of his truck, that said where, what time, he was diving, and it had an ETR. Even though the note might give a thief the opportunity to break in, it hadn't happened.

That way, if he doesn't come back, at least they'd know where to look.

ETR - Estimated Time of Return

I don't like texting or calling that much. If I don't answer my phone, I'm diving. I'm in the water more than I'm on land, so I usually call people only when I'm on land and want to go out for food.
