How do you get printing off old instructor slates

I have a pile of outdated SSI and PADI as well as a few NASDS Instructor slates that I would like to repurpose by taking the printing off of them. I tried a couple different grits of sandpaper on my orbital grinder and it was very slow going. Also tried acetone to no effect. Please don't give me you "ideas", I want to hear what you've used that works!
