How do you feel about PADI bashing on this thread??

Ok... just to throw a wrinkle into this whole PADI bashing party we are having here... as was in one of the other threads, there was a poll of how many people continue diving after getting their OW... it was agreed apon by most that the percentage was low. So therefore, should PADI be held to a higher standard for teaching and certifing OW if in fact, the people are going to never or seldom dive again??

Can only see that by comparing their rate for more courses with the rate for other agencies.

I suspect the % is roughly the same regardless of agency.

It is easy to point the finger at business. And this is what it boils down to. Buiness.

PADI being in the business of diving. They write up standards in hopes the professional individual will adhere to. But it never says that they cannot think outside of the BOX.

It boils down to the instructor..not the agency. The standards may be flawed. But they are there nonetheless. Why not improve instead of disaprove.

Why not make up a set of methods that will improve the standards set forth by ANY certifing agency. In this case PADI. they are not perfect..but then again whom is.

...PADI is what it is. If you have a gripe, it should be with the relaxed training standards being taught, not with the certifying organization(s).

Agree to a large extent, but it seems that PADI was among the leading agencies to water down (or "vertically organize" if you prefer) the standards we used to train to, at least when I was certified.

I think that is the core of the problem. There are a lot of experienced divers and instructors who feel the standards have been watered down to the point where safety is a signifcant issue. I happen to be one of those.

When standards were much higher, and the industry didn't have the current "vertical organization" design, OW classes were much more thorough and IMHO produced divers who were better trained. Some of the certified "divers" I see now a'days are a
danger not only to themselves, but to other divers.

I think there is a DIR bias (favoritism) on this board and I think that goes hand in hand with PADI bashing and every other agency. As with MS, Walmart, etc. it's now sort of popular to bash PADI.

With that, I'll almost bet that a good percentage of those people are either PADI certified, or took their OW through PADI!

I'd rather see what benefits each course offers, and let people pick from there. What does any "bashing" prove?

Currently I've only seen PADI shops locally, and they were who I became certified through....If NAUI had a presence I probably would have gone through them, or if both were offered through the same shop, I'd be confused...

PADI certified me, but I'm diving, and becoming my "own" diver!
