After reading a current thread about another annual service disaster maybe the ability to understand the operation of, test and service one's equipment should also be what a good diver should know and pratice.

I agree.. I know how and why they function but obviously need a bit of hands on to be comfortable, maybe I'll buy a knackered kit off e-bay and tear it up (those books are on order BTW).

I don't know if it has been mentioned yet but
Willingness to learn.
 
Respect for self, respect for others and respect for the environments we are visiting.
These are all attitude, and attitude will allow you to overcome nearly everything else.
Add in frequent practice and an inquiring mind about different aspects of the activity and you have a good and long term diver. Leave out anything and the interest will soon go away.
