I ascend flat out using my lungs (i.e. no finning).

I was directing this at everyone who has mentioned being a DM or diving with a DM. What I am asking is it common for a DM to essentially corral divers, keep an eye on their gas, and determine when to thumb a dive for a particular diver or group of divers.

Again, I have never been with a DM in the water, so I don't know if this is SOP.

I ascend horizontally using my BC to control my ascend, bleeding of air on the way up. Do my deep stops, chill at 15 for 3 or more and do the last 10ft as slow as I can. Always feel great after a dive....be aware of the microbubbles :)

First, not all divers request a DM, so they're free to dive their profile. But for those who choose a guided tour dive with me, it now becomes my responsibility to make sure they have safe, enjoyable dive. So I'll casually check an SPG from time to time, usually without the divers knowing. I also ask that they notify me when they get to 2000psi (on an AL80.) This does two things: first it lets me know how fast they burned 1000psi so I can modifiy the dive plan if necessary. And it also tells me if they're paying attention to their guages. It's all just for crowd control, making sure everybody get's back without incident.

But diving with a DM is not being babysat--at least with me it's not. Everyone I take is a certified diver, and I expect them to know at least the basics. Chances are you'll never know I know how much air you have left. My job is to point out some really cool things you may overlook on your own, or show you some pretty nice swim-throughs, and just provide the opportunity to experience the wreck as freely as possible.

Or you can opt for the short answer which would be, "Yes."

Did that answer your question?

I just take in a deep breath, hold it in as hard as I can, and bolt for the surface with all my might. :D

LOL!! Yes it did, thank you.

I have had a divemaster for 2 of my boat dives. In neither case were they asked for. In neither instance did they keep an eye on divers in the water, and in one case, the DM never got off the boat. So my experiences with DMs has been quite different to what I read here. Hence my curiousity as to what is "normal".

Thanks again.

In my experience it is the case in many areas I've dived throughout the world. However, here in SoCal and in the Florida Keys there was no DM in the water and we are/were free to do our own profiles.

I think I'll try that, should I inflate my BC too??
