A few people have mentioned snorkeling. That's how me and my wife got our bug. Does she do other athletic water sports? Like kayaking? Combine something she would like with snorkeling and see how it goes. My wife and I went to Hawaii last winter, rented a kayak and snorkel gear for a week. We paddled around the west coast of the big island for several days jumping in the water and doing a little skin diving. The area near Captain Cook monument was our first big bug - paddled across the bay, parked the boats, hopped in the crystal clear water and saw big schools of a variety of fish and sea turtles. Got home and signed up for a dive class.

Capt James is great, and you will have a good time. Check out his fancy new boat logo. I have a shack down there if you need any advice. When are you going to be here? Doing recreational profiles? I have some good videos of the Spar (shark fav) and 352 on Facebook, not that I know how to get them off of there to share them with you.

I'd love to see the videos. Last year, several DNYers had the pleasure of diving with Capt James on his boat and staying at his house. Yes, doing rec profiles, and you must stop by his house when I'm down to hang out. It's a fun group coming down although no single dude except the one who is with me....but they may know single dudes to recommend ya to in case you're off the man wagon. ;)

As I am on the man wagon, absence of single guys is a plus. I'd love to meet you guys when you are down, do PM me with the dates. I don't live full time at the coast, just go every other weekend or so.

I would love to share the videos with you, but every time I have tried to send them via a link to someone, it takes them to my mail inbox! I think I remember seeing that you are not on Facebook, right?

Bribery might work. Traveling is one of my weaknesses. I was told that if I got certified we would do lots traveling to exotic vacations for diving. It worked. I got certified and love it. Then we broke up. :( We have never dived together and I know have more dives than he does. :blinking:

At least he got me in to diving, so its not a complete loss. :D

To any future person who wants to convince me to do something that I am initially hesitant over, I can also be bribed with shoes, purses, nice watches, and technology type stuff. Dive vacations would work also.

I'd never trust a man to pick out my shoes, although it was a male friend who helped me select my custom cowboy boots.

Coffee in bed is my point of weakness.

I got a divorce

My girlfriend likes Scuba and we're planning several trips together.

Before you dismiss my advice..think about it.

Life is short

Bribery isn't going to do it.

I suggest moving on to "threatened implied infidelity".

Such as "There's this really cute blonde chick that recently started coming around the dive shop. I was helping her out of her wetsuit after a pool session and I happened to notice that she's got a body that would stop a freighter. She's going to be joining us on a group trip to the Caribbean next month. I'd ask you to come along, honey, but it's for DIVERS ONLY". Make sure you notify the dive shop owner that your wife might be calling to inquire about the group trip qualifications and to inform her of the next scheduled OW class.

Oh!

The Op isn't even married yet, my apologies.

In which case...cancel the engagement. There's lots of single women out there, many of whom would love to share the great sport of diving with you. Some may already be certified.

Why wait?

Life is short. If they're truly scars that you bear, time won't heal them..

Might as well jump right back in again.

But choose wisely based on your past mistakes.

:rofl3::rofl3::rofl3:

idocsteve, you remind me of someone I know. Will you be coming to ITK and bringing your lovely gf? I'd so like to meet you. Please be sure to let me know and which dives you plan on doing.

I've been told I'm a good buddy to have. I wear a bfk so you definitely don't want to miss out on the experience. And remember, Life Is Short.

A perspective from someone married to a water averse (doesn't even like swimming) west texas farm girl, who now scuba dives. Now I will caveate that with the fact that she is very conservative and on our dive trip in December, she participated in only half of the dives my sons and I did.

I agree with some of the other posters about starting small with snorkeling and also showing her some good videos of underwater life (avoid shark feeds I would think.)

If these two things spark any interest (my wife's desire to experience the visual side of the underwater world was what pushed her to give it a try) then see if she will at least take a class at your LDS. Important tip: Do not take the class with her and try not to be present during the class, even out of the water. Let the dive pro be the dive pro. (Although you can prep him ahead of time about her apprehension.)

It is very possible, especially given that she is athletic, that once she gets in the pool and then the lake (and don't go in 50 degree windy weather like we did, shiver) and sees what it is all about, whatever is keeping her from doing it will all go away.

My guess is that she has a small list of fear factors that need to be overcome. I had my own but I'm a "face your fears" kind of person. I'm betting there are some ear clearing issues, possibly the whole drowning thing, and the ever popular mask clearing fears. A good dive instructor can make all of those go away very quickly.

If none of this works, I'm betting that if you go to places you can dive (after the honeymoon!) that also have topside activities available, she'll be happy to take a couple hours of each day to catch some rays on the beach while you get your fix. Then you can go explore whatever else the location has to offer together.

Good luck, congratulations, and blessings on many happy years together!

I just might take you up on the offer, but whether or not I bring my girlfriend depends on the answer to the following question

What's a bfk?

When you find a successful way, let me know... ;)

We have an understanding. I get to dive, and she gets to go shopping and do her maintenance stuff (e.g. nails, hair, pilates, etc.). I had her go through a 3 month OW class with me, and log about 20 dives. She really did give it a fair shot, but she just doesn't enjoy it. Our understanding now is that she let's me dive, and I try not to give her a hard time about not doing it.

To me, diving is more than just a hobby. I enjoy doing it, reading about it, posting on the forum about it, seeing what other people have to say about it.

If I was with a person who wasn't into this particular interest...it just might cause problems down the line. Especially if the lack of interest in diving extends to other areas, such as a general love of the outdoors..and I'm not talking about the typical definition of the outdoors as described on most internet dating sites which really equates to 'the place between the car and the shopping mall'. I'm talking hiking, camping, boating, horseback riding, etc.

If your soon to be wife would prefer to shop and do her nails while you're out getting some good natural exercise doing these various activities...you just might have a problem down the line when the honeymoon wears off and you realize that you don't have much in common other than compatibility in the bedroom and the ability to hold a decent conversation.

Just say'en
