A retiered Fire Captain here, firefighting can be more dangerous than diving....

I just met my SO about 8 months ago. she was very excited about my diving, she had no experience with anybody who dove before.

our first dive trip together was diving in the north sea on a WWI wreck.

the first dive we did a diver died durring deco.

later in the trip there was another problem with a dive on a rebreather resulting in near drowning.

this has dramaticly effected her oppinion of technical diving.
she has since done a dive and loves diving.

now any time i do a "big" dive it is quite an issue, i need to give her an time i will surface, and if i don't call within a short time afterwards it is again a big issue.

will i adjust my diving.....well the events i reffered to above have adjusted my diving.....will someone else adjust my diving probably not.

you could say we have somewhat of an understanding.
she now quizzes me on things like "did you analyze your gasses" "how long is your deco time" "what is your bailout plan"

she does a better buddy check than any buddie i have ever had. and it is amazing how much she knows about technical diving considering the fact that she has only done one dive ever.

her only exposure to diving has been by acting as surface support / dive master to some of the best divers in the world.

My girlfriend decided she wanted to be able to provide in water support / be a safety diver. She's been diving for about four years, mostly recreational limits. Great I thought..

Now she wants a full trimix cert, her own set of gear, etc. I've created a monster!

I only thought my engineering salary would cover my hobby ... Little did I know that I have to buy *two* new cannister lights, four more regs, etc...

This is almost as much fun as when she "just wanted to learn how to land the airplane". She's probably more active in flying than I am now.

I dive with my wife, brother and cousin.
I've been spending double for ten years.

It does limit the planning conversations that I have with my brother.

In 5-10 years, my 3 kids will be of diving age.
I can't wait to have some new buddies but will definately need some bulk discounts.

You can be proud, and should be very happy that your SO shares your active livestyle, and your interests. Count yourself lucky!

Flying, and diving, and a good woman to share it all with? Top of the mark, Lad!:D :D

General she is concerned about my desires to go deeper or longer or breath different gases....

she worries that the fun goes out of it when it gets so technical ....

she says that there is nothing to see down there .,...

but she is now breathing Nitrox and quite happy about that ... and she went to 36.2m on the last dive trip and I went to 37m and she was telling me off for going so deep!

But she forgot to mention that on the dive before she was at 36.2m ..... it's a slow process as is getting the training to go further..

But I love her more than diving so .. I will have to find a balance.

=-)
