I'm going to be in Cozumel from May 16 to 22 -- and my non-diving wife is joining me on the 19th. . . . Most of my diving will be from May 16-19 (although hopefully I can sneak a few more in while my wife is there).

Anyone looking for a buddy? Beginner-intermediate?

Hotel recommendations? We're looking for a non-AI hotel, nice but not too expensive, preferably with a beach. After searching around here for several hours, Caribe Blu seems like a strong contender, but any other suggestions would be welcome.

In looking for a DO -- I'm surprised to see that most of them don't list their sites. . . I'd like to see as many different locations as possible, reef, cenotes, marine life, etc. Possibly diving in Cancun and/or Playa. Night dives would be a plus. . . . Do any/all/note of the DO's do this? Should I book multi-day dives in advance or do I need to book several dives with different DO's? How much of this do I need to do in advance vs. waiting until I get there?

Also -- most of the places I've visited before, you could set up a dive the night before or even that morning -- but I'm getting the impression now that it might already be too late for me to book?!? :11:

HELP!

Thanks in advance from a first-time poster. . . .

Caribe Blu is a great divers hotel. Not sure Iwould stick a non diver there unless they like to read a lot. Not much to do. Of course the southern resorts have more but most are AI and further from town.

Hotel Cozumel is close to town and they do have activites during the day. You can go AI or not there. Same for Fiesta Americana I think.

I recommend Blue XT Sea as a dive op. She runs a very good op and has great customer service. I would book in advance if you can you don't want to get to Coz and the op you want to use is booked.

Here is a link that has a lot of choices for dive ops and hotels.

We will be there in July diving w/BXT and staying at Hotel Cozumel.

Have fun

Are you kidding? My family and I have been staying there since 1982 or so, and in those early days, none of us were divers. There will be 13 of us (family and friends) there together this year, and only 4 of us dive. If a visitor to Cozumel depends on the hotel to provide entertainment, then IMO he/she is missing out on a lot of what the island has to offer, but then again, I am not a big fan of AI's.

There is not a lot going on at the hotel itself, and that is a good thing. There's plenty going on close by all around it.

Gordon you are correct. I was just noting his post that he and a nondiving buddy I assumed he meant one person. If that is the case Caribe Blu may not be the best choice for the non diving buddy if he/she is alone while the buddy is out diving.

You and your family are going as a group and of course it will be perfect for your situation. Always more fun as a group. I was just suggesting a larger hotel that has some sort of daily activities. :D

Have fun looking forward to your trip report when you get back.

Thanks.

Ain't no way my wife is waiting around that hotel for me while I'm out diving!!!
....in Coz, while you are there. We are meeting at La Choza on the 15th around 7pm.
Many others, including myself, will be diving the 16th - 19th. Write back when you figure out where you are staying. Planning some shore dives, too.
We are at Fiesta Americana from the 14-20th.
We are diving with Blue XT Sea on the 15th and 19th. Couldn't get any other days with her.... may dive with the FA Dive Op on the 16-18.

Thanks for the invite, Divedoggy, I might just take you up on that! Hopefully we'll get the hotel & DO figured out tonight, and I'll see if Christi's open the same days that you're set up with her!

I found with my wife she was far happer staying in town, far more to do.
I might also suggest the Casa Mexicanna as there a nice place, a little more bread than say the Vista or Bahiia but your wife may be happy that way.

as far as dive ops I use Xtabay with dario, but it's very small, as a beginner you may want to check out poppa hogs.

It seems like a place close to town, or an AI with lots of activities would do the trick.
Give a post when you know. I'll check the board when we are in Akumal.
Also...I thought that I would post so that I can see my countdown timer!!! :D

My wife is sold on Villablanca. Works for me.

Christi is sold out thru June.

I'm considering a hotel-dive package with VB & Papa Hogs -- any thoughts on that? The lack of flexibility kind of bothers me a bit, but maybe that's not such a big deal. The price is sure OK.

I would DEFINITELY be up for shore dives, perhaps a twilight or night dive?
