Imagine if you heard about your child's accident / mishap / (heaven forbid) death from the newspaper or an online new source... I'm not sure having the police knock on your door is too much better, but at least then they can help protect you from yourself during the initial shock phase.

But they don't want to be claiming that this body is him until they're sure. Could possibly be someone else, although it's likely it's him.
