The vehicle of a missing Wellington man has been found near where it's believed he went diving last Thursday, according to police.

Authorities are now preparing a coastline and sea search for missing man Jinting Guo.

Police said this afternoon they had found the 35-year-old's vehicle, a grey station wagon, parked on Terrace Road in Titahi Bay, around Porirua.

"Jinting is believed to have gone diving alone near his vehicle on Thursday 19 October.

"Police are planning a search of the Titahi Bay for Mr Guo which will include the coastline and sea. Police request help from the public with any sightings of Mr Guo on Thursday in the Titahi Bay area, or any diving equipment located along the Titahi Bay shoreline."

Earlier, police had appealed for sightings of Guo's vehicle.

"He was driving his car, a grey 2011 Audi Q7 station wagon, registration number GAS511."

The 35-year-old had "recently begun diving" and had taken his diving gear with him when he left home on Thursday, according to a police spokesperson.

People with information are urged to contact police on 105.
