In Utila the cheapest accommodations are shared dormitory style rooms from $2.00 per person per night. For details of Hotels and Accomodations in Utila check out the web page www.aboututila.com/AccomInfo/Index.htm which lists all the accommodations (with details) in Utila from Resorts to Rooms for Rent. Rooms for Rent are the cheapest accommodation available. Competition here in Utila is pretty fierce, so you will generally get what you pay for. A small basic room with shared bathroom typically costs $5.00 - $10.00 per night (for 2 people).

Many of the Dive Shops offer discounted accommodation for people taking scuba diving courses with them, and Captain Morgan's can offer a package of scuba diving, accomodations and meals staying out at their Hotel Keyla on the Utila Cays. This is ideal for those looking to 'get away from it all' and hide-out on Suc-Suc (Pidgeon Cay), one of the small Cays off the west end of Utila, but can be a draw-back for those wanting to spend more time and enjoy the nightlife in the town centre. Still if you are planning 2 weeks in Utila, you could always spend one of them with Captain Morgan's and the other on the main island.

Some Apartments (especially Countryside) can be rented by the night. Countryside Apartments start at $10.00 per night for a one bedroom apartment with double bed, kitchenette and shower. But apartments are very popular with Divemaster and Divers staying in Utila for 4 weeks or more, so they may not be available exactly when you need them.

Be aware that Utila's Carnaval will be held from 23-31 July and accommodations fill very quckly and the days before and during Carnaval. Also Utila's famous Sun Jam "a music rave and fiesta held at Water Cay" is on the weekend of August 6. Again accommodations with be filled quickly for this weekend.

Baleadas (a soft flour tortilla filled with refried beans, grated cheese and onions) are a very filling food at about 8-10 Lempira (40-50 US cents) each and very popular among backpackers on a budget, although you will probably need to take a vitamin supplement if you plan to live on these.

You don't say if you are an experienced scuba diver or planning to take lessons. Regardless, scuba diving is relatively cheap in Utila. Open Water Scuba Diver Courses start at $199.00 and for the certified diver, Fun Dives are $25.00 for a single tank dive (all inclusive of boat ride, equipment hire, etc) with the price falling to $17.50 per dive (all inclusive) if you purchase a "pack" of 10 dives. For the latest on scuba diving prices in Utila check out www.aboututila.com/ScubaInfo/Scuba-Diving-Prices.htm

The local beers (usually a very important item to most backpackers) are Salva Vida, Port Royal and my favourite, Imperial, and the price of these range from 15.00 Lempira (80 US cents) a bottle at happy hour prices to 25.00 Lempira ($1.30 US) at peak hour in the popular "hot" bars. Of course you can always buy a case of 24 bottles at the supermarket for around 8.00 Lempira (40 cents US) per bottle, plus a $13.00 refundable deposit on the bottles and the plastic case.
