OP here. yes, i'm in texas. and yes, she is threatening a fine (actually, threatening my landlord with a fine). as to the legality of storing cylinders, am i correct that a scuba cylinder is only HAZMAT when being filled/transported (thats why blending techs need to take HAZMAT refreshers every three years?) if so, how could this HOA superseded the law?

I would read my lease agreement very carefully. I am sure that the restrictive covenants in the Home Owners Agreement are addressed. Breaching those terms are likely to put you in default on the lease and subject to eviction.

If it were me, I would find another place to store your tanks and be very nice to the management. As a lessee, this is a fight that you may win (not likely but possible), and certainly not before you are evicted. No amount of shouting how stupid the rules/regulations are will help and if you try to play any tricks, they are likely to really put it to you. Your best option is probably finding a new place to rent.

The way the rental market is, I would guess that the landlord would go to great lengths to keep you happy.

Is this in those areas with $2000 month mortgages and furniture from goodwill thanks to the mortgage? I saw lots of those when I lived in Columbus. Especially in Worthington and the Olentangy areas. Was great. Orange crates and futons except when a dinner pahty must be held. Then rent a center brought in stuff for the weekend.

Worthington kinda surprises me, but Olentangy, heck I just call that campus . Unless you are talking north of Riverside hospital, up towards bethal / henderson road.

I would respond to the association, not the complainer, and ask for specific clarification on the HOA authority to regulate common sporting equipment stored within your own abode.
Might also wonder, "And how does this apply to barbecue propane tanks?" (which is an excellent point previously raised).

Own a house in subdivision with HOA for about 5 years now (I don't live there; my grown son does).
It's a nice house on a nice street in a decent part of town, and if you want to live in that general area, you're probably going to live in a development with an HOA.
Aside from the annual bill (about $160, I think. Includes pool use), only heard from them once, when they sent a notice about a dead spot on the lawn.
I got a little steamed, but replied with a reasonable letter, saying, "We're working on it." Included a statement from the lawn-servce company that was treating it, and added, "If anyone else has any better lawn-maintenance thoughts, we're open to suggestion."
Never heard another word.

also fire extinguishers, as long as they are not dry chemical.

I'm not sure about dry chemical being so different .. they still use a pressurized gas as a propellant and have to be refilled from time to time

I am wondering how you are doing with this situation.

Especially since we have multiple tanks in our garage and I'm wondering if I will ever face this same situation should we move away from our subdivision into one where the people aren't as cool/noncaring as the neighbors we currently have.

If you do move just carry em in with lampshades on them. Screw the hoa either its your house or its not. Simple as that. Better yet put radioactive stickers on em and use a Russian accent. That will make sure the pukes mind their own businesses. Lousy little two bit dictator turds that they are.

You really need to work on expressing yourself. It's not healthy to keep your feelings bottled up inside.
