I'm looking at some BP/W combos. I still cannot decide between a Hog Harness or a Deluxe style harness. I've found some infomation in some other threads, but I'm still worried the Hog harness will not be snug enough for me. I really like to snug down my current jacket style BC.

For the deluxe, I'm looking at the DSS. If I go with the Hog, my options are pretty wide open.

Thanks

I think you'll find the diving a BP/W is a different experience completely from the 'snugness' factor.

If folks can dive hog harnesses with multiple stages, doubles and scooters in tow, chances are that it will hold everything you'll have pretty well :)

Go with the Hog harness, once you get it adjusted right, you'll love it. It just takes a few dives and some tweaking to get it just right.

Don't muck up a good thing. Try the beutifully generic standard harness. If you don't like it, you can muck it up, I mean deluxify it, yoursellf.

If it's any help, I originally went with the Dive-Rite deluxe when I bought my BP/W. Since then I have switched to the hog.

For me, the reason was pretty simple, with the deluxe, I was limited on where I could place d-rings. With the hog, I can place them wherever I want and I can also place more of them, which if important for me.

Rigging the hog was actually easier than setting up the deluxe.

I make and sell both an adjustable harness (Pro-Fit) and the single piece Hogarthian Harness.

I'd recommend the Hogarthian Harness. That's what I use. Simple, inexpensive, packs up smaller.

Hogarthian Harnesses are different than a Jacket BC. They can be adjusted to be very snug, but they don't need to be overly tight. I'd guess that you are snugging down your current BC in an effort increase the stability of the tank. A backplate will provide stability without an excessively tight harness.

Hogarthian Harnesses do require a little practice to use, but for the great majority of people they aren't difficult to use once you learn how.

Keep in mind that if you have any further Tech or GUE training in mind you may well be required to use a Hogarthian Harness.

That was the root of my snugness obsession.

That was the root of my snugness obsession.

I have three rigged with hog harnesses and am in the process of putting a fourth together. Simple, very strong, and once properly adjusted they feel like they're just a part of you. And if you gain or lose a pound or two easily adjustable. No clips or straps to constrict your breathing.

The deluxe harness with its buckles offer you the safety feature of being able to remove youself from the harness, especially useful when you find youself stuck in a tight spot. In the Hog harness you would most likely need to cut yourself out of the rig, thereby rendering it usless - no big deal unless you are at 100'. Serious cave and wreck divers prefer the single piece web, but unless you are doing that... Also, you can buy the deluxe harness with your plate AND you can buy an additional one piece Hog harness for a little extra money to use as your backup. Regardless of choice of webbing, you need two of them.

I tried both the OMS delux w/ quick release and the standard hog harness. The delux seemed just too much clips, keepers and rings for the amount of webbing it attached to for my taste. The std hog harness is quite easy and not too difficult for me to remove even underwater, and I dive a old CF200 drysuit with the old high profile shoulder exhaust valve.

Overall, for the cost of a piece of webbing (~$15) and a hour of threading and adjustment, IMHO it's worth trying out the std hog rig first.

Take care,
John
