Fight continues against scuttling navy frigate off NSW coast - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Fight continues against scuttling navy frigate off NSW coast
Posted Wed Mar 23, 2011 3:52pm AEDT

The group fighting plans to scuttle the ex-HMAS Adelaide off the New South Wales central coast hasn't given up its bid to stop the event, for a second time.

The frigate is scheduled to go down off Avoca Beach on April 13, almost a year after the No Ships Action Group won an injunction against the initial plan, on environmental grounds.

The group rallied against the scuttling in Sydney today and revealed the matter has been referred to the New South Wales Ombudsman because of the way the process has been managed.

Group spokeswoman and Independent candidate for the seat of Terrigal Michelle Meares is hopeful the event will again be postponed.

"One is the compliance issue and the things that need to be removed from the vessel. The other one is the setting of a date for the scuttling of the vessel before the required dumping permit has been issued," she said.

"It is also the extent to which the Property Management Authority has sought and considered information about the apparent problems following the sinking of the HMAS Canberra off the coast in Victoria."

Ms Meares says the group is considering other legal options to stop the scuttling.

Meanwhile, the Greens candidate for Terrigal Dougal Anderson is cautious about plans to scuttle the frigate next month.

"I've called for an independent body to confirm that the State Government has removed the material that was specified in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal decision," he said.

"If it's going ahead, lets make sure it is done properly."
