My guess is that they will make much brighter LEDs before they perfect HID. But, I'm not an expert on lighting. Heck, I don't really know much at all.

I think you may be right. I have already seen Tektite led. they have a three led canister light. Also for the hand held, Princeton Tec came out w/ 3 led that puts UK LED to shame and rivals the UK light cannon.

A buddy used this: (http://www.fa-mi.com/ecommerce2/prodotti2_1/) 3led-light during our dives this weekend and I couldn´t see any noticable difference between it and my DR MR11...
