Im a new diver 15 dives as of sunday. I have a xcell 786 polar tec semi dry suit. I was in 44 degree water for 58 minutes and was very warm. One of the guys i was diving with dove with a dry suit and said he was very cold. Im a construction worker i work out side every day. Im wondering if people who are use to the cold can talerat it more than others. Yesterday it never got above 16 degrees. I was cold and ill admit it, but i dont even put on gloves onless its 30 degrees or less. I realy dont like to be cold and try to dress for the weather. Im allready plaining on buying a dry suit but ill keep on diving wet untill im cold. How cold will the ocean get hear in newengland. I wanted to dive this weekend but all the guys i been diving with said it going to be to cold and im the only one diving wet.

As an outside kind of guy, you are probably sensitive to the occasional nor'easter, and this weekend is looking like one. As much as I want to get in the water, even if it's a bit on the chilly side, I have to admit that the snow will probably keep me off the beach.

When are we going to Poling it up? I know Spectre, ericfine and I want to put something together before CAD takes their boat out for Jan.

I'm not sure. I was supposed to dive the Poling and the NH with CAD last Sunday with my father and his buddy, but, the dive was canceled due to high wind. I'm hoping to get that dive in and a scallop dive before they pull the boat. Definatlely, throw up a post if you guys book the boat.

nemo06489, IME some people seem to be able feel less than others. But, again, becareful, just because you don't "feel" cold doesn't mean your core temp isn't dropping. Like I posted ealier on this thread - one of buddies dove a whole winter wet, he's the type that doesn't get cold very oftne (although he has a DUI Now). The most basic thing with winter divingis not to lose your hands, once they shut down you are in trouble. Also, if you get cold you tend to be tired for the rest of the day.

I want to get out sometime in the next 2 weeks either at Cape Anne or Nubble not sure if will have the time..Just got a new 7mm suit so i think i would be fine as long as I don;t hit the thermocline from hell.....like you guys said ..dressed in the car and hotwater ddown the suuit :) .....

That brings up another point, there's a big differnece between a new 7mm and one that been in 100' of water a few times. WSs really do get crushed alot and then they insulate less. My 7mm Seaquest cold water jump suit (which was a great suit) is now retired to free diving, but, after a year of doing deep dives in it, I could really notice the differnce for the pressure crushing the bubbles in the neopre.

Yes it is certainly true that those used to the cold tolerate it better. Studies done with natives of the Arctic have proven this. I grew up playing pond hockey and to this day walk out to get the mail in bare feet sometimes in the dead of winter. Cold weather is just a nuisance not something to avoid.

The lowest water temperature I've encountered in New England was 30f this past February/March in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. It's the only time I ever had a reg freeze up on me.

MASS-Diver made a good point on the core temperature thing and your hands. Numb hands can't handle an emergency.

Im diving in Jame Town this weekend I was told the water is in the 30's. This might be my last dive wet. If im cold ill be buying a dry suit. I'll just have to buy one that is the same color as the suit i have now. That way my wife wont know the difference.
